THE ZIRFLEX PROCESS INTERIM DEVELOPMENT SUMMARY

Description: The Zircaloy-clad fuels and the application of the Zirflex Process for dissolution are discussed. Zirflex chemical flowsheets are presented as developed by pilot plant operatlons. The Zirflex Process is applicable to the reprocessing of fuels from the Dresden Reactor and the PWR Reactor. Other applications of the process are the Plutonium Recycle Test Reactor fuels and the New Production Reactor fuels, possible fuels from the Experimental Breeder Reactor; NPD-2 fuels; and fuels from Carolina-Vi… more

A Study of the Fuel Value of U{Sup 23){Sup 3}

Description: The fuel value of U/sup 233/ was calculated for five thermal reactors (Dresden. Yankee, Carolinas-Vlrginia, Hallam, GCR-II). Relative to a U/sup 235/ value of per gram, pure U/sup 233/ had a value that varied from .2 to .2 per gram. U/sup 233/ contained in once- and twice-recycle uranium from an initial U/sup 233/-Th cycle had a value slightly in excess of the value of pure U/ sup 233.. The value of U/sup 233/ in recycle uranium from an initial U/sup 235/- Th cycle was less than that for pure U… more

CHEMICAL ENGINEERING DIVISION SUMMARY REPORT FOR APRIL, MAY, JUNE 1960

Description: 7 9 7 D 8 8 9 9 7 7 ; 8 < fuel-reprocessing plant using pyrometallurgical procedures is being designed and constructed as part of the Experimental Breeder Reactor No. 2 project. Cable samples sealed with Temporell No. 741 were irradiated to 3.0 x lO/sup 9/ rad. Tests of the absorber-type fume trap were successful. Preparations were continued for high- activitylevel demonstrations of the melt-refining process for EBR-2 core fuel. An attractive and efficient procedure for removing uranium skull m… more

Effect of Reduced U-235 Price on Fuel Cycle Costs

Description: A study was made to determine the effect of changes in natural uranium cost and in separative work charges on fuel cycle costs in nuclear power plants. Reactors considered were a Dresden-type boiling water reactor (BWR) and a Yankee- type pressurized water reactor (PWR), with net power ratings of 100, 300, and 500 Mwe. Fuel cycle costs were calculated for these reactors, using either enriched uranium or U/sup 235/-thorium as the fuel material. The price schedule for uranium was based on a feed … more

Form, Style, Function and Rhetoric in Gottlob Harrer's Sinfonias: A Case Study in the Early History of the Symphony

Description: Gottlob Harrer (1703-1755) composed at least twenty-seven sinfonias for his patron Count Heinrich von Bruhl in Dresden from 1731-1747, placing them among the earliest concert symphonies written. Harrer's mostly autograph sinfonia manuscripts are significant documents that provide us with a more thorough understanding of musical activities in and around Dresden. Several of the works indicate topical references, including dance, march, and hunt allusions, that comment on the Dresden social occasi… more
