Vascular plants of the Nevada Test Site and Central-Southern Nevada: ecologic and geographic distributions

Description: The physical environment of the Nevada Test Site and surrounding area is described with regard to physiography, geology, soils, and climate. A discussion of plant associations is given for the Mojave Desert, Transition Desert, and Great Basin Desert. The vegetation of disturbed sites is discussed with regard to introduced species as well as endangered and threatened species. Collections of vascular plants were made during 1959 to 1975. The plants, belonging to 1093 taxa and 98 families are list… more

Reproductive temperature tolerance of a desert pupfish. Technical progress report, July 1, 1975--June 30, 1976. [Cyprinodon nevadensis]

Description: The effects of various constant and daily fluctuating temperature regimes on reproductive performance in a eurythermal fish, the Amargosa pupfish, Cyprinodon n. nevadensis, were investigated. This species occurs in the drainage system of the Amargosa River extending from southern Death Valley, California, to the southwestern border of Nevada. The genus Cyprinodon has attracted attention because it is widely distributed throughout the deserts of the southwestern United States and several of its … more

Soil moisture transport in arid site vadose zones. [Evaluation of Hanford as national site for radioactive waste storage]

Description: Data are presented from measurements of soil moisture at the Hanford Reservation. Possible mechanisms for moisture transport in arid and semi-arid climates were studied. Measurements for the lysimeter experiment and the thermocouple psychrometer experiment were continued with a new series of measurements using closely spaced sensors installed to a depth of 1.52 meters. During the 1973-1974 water year the percolation envelope of higher moisture content penetrated to a depth of four meters in the… more

Land rehabilitation research at Pacific Northwest Laboratories

Description: One of the major goals of rehabilitation of surface mined lands is to establish a self-sustaining vegetative cover. The cover should provide protection against wind and water erosion and provide forage for wildlife and livestock comparable to that of pre-mining conditions. Although livestock grazing has been practiced in the Western United States for more than a century there is a general paucity of information concerning the primary productivity of western rangelands. The productivity of sageb… more

Vegetation of steep slopes in the shrub-steppe region of south-central Washington

Description: This paper presents data and conclusions concerning the vegetation and soils of steep natural slopes of arid regions. Cover by species and soil physical and chemical properties were taken from 10 canyons along the Columbia River north of Pasco, Washington. Vegetative cover was significantly different and averaged 25 percent on the south-facing and 72 percent on the north-facing slopes. The mean number of species were significantly different. Four species were restricted to the south slopes, 10 … more

Calculated and observed nonisothermal multiphase in flow in vertical columns. [Mathematical model for movement of air, water vapor, and liquid water in dry desert soil]

Description: A mathematical formulation which describes the movement of air, water vapor, and liquid water in dry desert soils is presented. The equations are a combination of those used in the oil industry for nonisothermal-multiphase flow and those from the soil science literature which includes the effects of vapor diffusion in a static air phase. The equations can be solved numerically by using either finite differences or collocation on finite elements for long, one-dimensional vertical flow systems un… more

Energy budgets of animals: behavioral and ecological implications. Progress report. [Egg laying in laboratory by desert lizards]

Description: Climate effects on biomass requirements for mammal and reptile maintenance, growth, and reproduction and implications for climate-influenced population dynamics were explored using computer simulations. The simulations revealing critical shortages of appropriate data have led to the design of experiments to acquire the needed information. The development of a technique to induce repeated egg laying in the laboratory for reproduction studies of some desert lizards was accomplished this year. (CH) more

Livestock forage and mineral relations on a shrub--steppe rangeland in northwestern United States. [ALE Reserve]

Description: The study area is the Arid Lands Ecology (ALE) Reserve, a portion of the United States Energy Research and Development Administration's Hanford Reservation located in the semi-arid region of south-central Washington. Small experimental pastures were subjected to four consecutive years of moderate spring grazing by yearling steers. These pastures are unique in that they represent grazing stresses on previously ungrazed (by livestock) plant communities. These communities had been protected from g… more

Bird Risk Behaviors and Fatalities at the Altamont Pass Wind Resource Area: Period of Performance, March 1998--December 2000

Description: It has been documented that wind turbine operations at the Altamont Pass Wind Resource Area kill large numbers of birds of multiple species, including raptors. We initiated a study that integrates research on bird behaviors, raptor prey availability, turbine design, inter-turbine distribution, landscape attributes, and range management practices to explain the variation in avian mortality at two levels of analysis: the turbine and the string of turbines. We found that inter-specific differences… more

Fracture Permeability Evolution in Rock from the Desert Peak EGS Site

Description: Fluid flow experiments are being conducted on core specimens of quartz monzonite retrieved from depths of about 1 km at the Desert Peak East EGS site in Churchill County, Nevada. Our immediate goal is to observe permeability evolution in fractures at pressure and temperature conditions appropriate to the Desert Peak geothermal site. Longer term, we aim to evaluate mechanisms that control the evolution of fracture permeability. In the experiments saline water is flowed through an artificial frac… more

Comparative Plutonium-239 Dose Assessment for Three Desert Sites: Maralinga, Australia; Palomares, Spain; and the Nevada Test Site, USA - Before and After Remedial Action

Description: As a result of nuclear weapons testing and accidents, plutonium has been distributed into the environment. The areas close to the sites of these tests and accidental dispersions contain plutonium deposition of such a magnitude that health authorities and responsible officials have mandated that the contaminated areas be protected, generally through isolation or removal of the contaminated areas. In recent years remedial actions have taken place at all these sites. For reasons not entirely clear… more
