Electrochemical Synthesis and Characterization of Inorganic Materials from Aqueous Solutions

Description: The dissertation consists of the following three sections: 1. Hydroxyapatite (HA) coatings. In this work, we deposited HA precursor films from weak basic electrolytic solution (pH= 8-9) via an electrochemical approach; the deposits were changed into crystallite coatings of hydroxyapatite by sintering at specific temperatures (600-800 ºC). The formed coatings were mainly characterized by powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and scanning electron microsc… more

The preparation and characterization of thermo-sensitive colored hydrogel film and surfactant-free porous polystyrene three-dimensional network.

Description: Polymer hydrogel films change their properties in response to environmental change. This remarkable phenomenon results in many potential applications of polymer hydrogel films. In this thesis colored thermo-sensitive poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAAm) hydrogel film was prepared by firstly synthesizing polymer latex and secondarily crosslinking the nanoparticles and casting the polymers onto glass. The shape-memory effect has been observed when changing the environmental temperature. The temp… more

Improvement of Homogeneity and Adhesion of Diamond-Like Carbon Films on Copper Substrates

Description: Electrodeposition method is used to deposit diamond-like carbon (DLC) films on copper substrates via anodic oxidation at low temperature. These films are characterized using Raman spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy. Homogeneity of these films is studied using Raman spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy. Scotch tape peel tests indicate adherent film on copper substrate. Carbon phase transformation is studied using thermal annealing expe… more

The Development of an Analytical Microwave Electromagnetic Pulse Transmission Probe and Preliminary Test Results

Description: Within this educational endeavor instrumental development was explored through the investigation of microwave induce stable electromagnetic waves within a non-linear yttrium iron garnet ferromagnetic waveguide. The resulting magnetostatic surface waves were investigated as a possible method of rapid analytical evaluation of material composition. Initial analytical results indicate that the interaction seen between wave and material electric and magnetic fields will allow phase coherence recover… more

Deposition and Characterization of Thin Metal Oxide Heterostructures for Electronic and Magnetic Device Applications

Description: The first study investigated the deposition and characterization of the CoO and Co3O4 phases of cobalt oxide. It was determined that both phases can be easily distinguishable by XPS, LEED and EELS and grown by only altering the oxygen partial pressure during MBE deposition. This fundamental knowledge gives a foundation for further experiments involving graphene growth on cobalt oxides. The second study focused on the layer-by-layer growth of graphene on another metal oxide, MgO. Past research g… more

Surface Engineering of Materials for Beyond-Microelectronics

Description: All oxide heterostructure Cr2O3/TiO2-x was deposited on Al2O3(0001) single crystal via MBE. The analysis of interfacial interactions involving two metal oxides resulting in magnetic properties gave insights for using such heterostructures as potential spintronic device materials. The corundum phase epitaxial growth of TiO2-x on Al2O3 was characterized using XPS, AES, EELS, and LEED. The data obtained gives evidence of presence of two-dimensional electron gas at titania surface due to oxygen vac… more

The Recombination Rate Coefficient of Molecular Helium Ions in a Pulsed Afterglow at 1.86 Torr

Description: The recombination rate coefficient for molecular helium ions has been measured in a pulsed afterglow at 1.86 Torr as a function of electron temperature and electron density without making a priori assumptions about the functional dependence. The concentrations of the molecular ions and electrons were measured and the source terms for the molecular ions were included in the rate equation.

In vitro Biomedical Application and Photothermal Therapy Evaluation of Gold Complexes and Gold Nanoparticles

Description: Plasmonic photothermal therapy (PPTT) has a rising promise for treating different cancer cells such as lymphoma or stomach cancer. Technique development of PPTT using metallic nanoparticles is developed upon a modification of the irradiation therapy using two major changes: using a less harmful visible amber light (excluding blue light) and using gold-loaded biocompatible nanoparticles. Acrylate nanoparticles were loaded with desired types of gold nanoparticles at different sizes. The gold-load… more

Interfacial Electrochemistry of Cu/Al Alloys for IC Packaging and Chemical Bonding Characterization of Boron Doped Hydrogenated Amorphous Silicon Films for Infrared Cameras

Description: We focused on a non-cooling room temperature microbolometer infrared imaging array device which includes a sensing layer of p-type a-Si:H component layers doped with boron. Boron incorporation and bonding configuration were investigated for a-Si:H films grown by plasma enhanced chemical deposition (PECVD) at varying substrate temperatures, hydrogen dilution of the silane precursor, and dopant to silane ratio using multiple internal reflection infrared spectroscopy (MIR-IR). This study was then … more

Design, Synthesis, and Characterization of Aqueous Polymeric Hybrid Composites and Nanomaterials of Platinum(II) and Gold(I) Phosphorescent Complexes for Sensing and Biomedical Applications

Description: The two major topics studied in this dissertation are the gold(I) pyrazolate trimer {[Au(3-R,5-R’)Pz]3} complexes in aqueous chitosan polymer and phosphorescent polymeric nanoparticles based on platinum(II) based complex. The first topic is the synthesis, characterization and optical sensing application of gold(I) pyrazolate trimer complexes within aqueous chitosan polymer. A gold(I) pyrazolate trimer complex, {[Au(3-CH3,5-COOH)Pz]3}, shows high sensitivity and selectivity for silver ions in aq… more
