Mushy-zone model with an exact solution

Description: In this paper we propose a very simple model of a mushy zone which admits of an explicit solution. To our knowledge, it is the only instance where an actual observation of the mushy zone width and structure is used as a partial basis for the model definition. The model rests upon two unknown parameters. The first determines the relation between the equilibrium temperature gradient and the mushy zone width. The second depends upon the dendritic structure in the mushy zone, and is related to the … more

Linear equations in general purpose codes for stiff ODEs

Description: It is noted that it is possible to improve significantly the handling of linear problems in a general-purpose code with very little trouble to the user or change to the code. In such situations analytical evaluation of the Jacobian is a lot cheaper than numerical differencing. A slight change in the point at which the Jacobian is evaluated results in a more accurate Jacobian in linear problems. (RWR)

Comments on the integrability of the loop-space chiral equations

Description: A demonstration is given how the ordinary space chiral equations provide the existence conditions for the infinite number of conserved currents and how these currents are related to the so-called inverse-scattering equations, whose integrability is provided by the original chiral equations. Loop-space chiral equations are introduced. The integrability conditions of the non-local currents in two possible different situations are discussed. In the first case, the generating functions are function… more

Implementation of Rosenbrock methods

Description: Rosenbrock formulas have shown promise in research codes for the solution of initial-value problems for stiff systems of ordinary differential equations (ODEs). To help assess their practical value, the author wrote an item of mathematical software based on such a formula. This required a variety of algorithmic and software developments. Those of general interest are reported in this paper. Among them is a way to select automatically, at every step, an explicit Runge-Kutta formula or a Rosenbro… more

Spectroscopy of the amide-I modes of acetanilide

Description: Raman measurements were made on acetanilide (N-phenyl-acetamide). Data are presented of the integrated intensity of the 1650 cm/sup /minus/1/ band as a function of temperature. The experimental procedures and data reduction were highly rigorous and are believed to be to most reliable data available. A concise theory of polaron states is presented and used to interpret the data. 22 refs., 4 figs., 1 tab.

Optimal parameters for linear second-degree stationary iterative methods

Description: It is shown that the optimal parameters for linear second-degree stationary iterative methods applied to nonsymmetric linear systems can be found by solving the same minimax problem used to find optimal parameters for the Tchebychev iteration. In fact, the Tchebychev iteration is asymptotically equivalent to a linear second-degree stationary method. The method of finding optimal parameters for the Tchebychev iteration given by Manteuffel (Numer. Math., 28, 307-27 (1977)) can be used to find opt… more

A Bayesian Approach to the Design and Analysis of Computer Experiments

Description: We consider the problem of designing and analyzing experiments for prediction of the function y(f), t {element_of} T, where y is evaluated by means of a computer code (typically by solving complicated equations that model a physical system), and T represents the domain of inputs to the code. We use a Bayesian approach, in which uncertainty about y is represented by a spatial stochastic process (random function); here we restrict attention to stationary Gaussian processes. The posterior mean fun… more

Numerical simulation of high-energy-electron gerated field in dielectrics of various geometries. Final report, June 1, 1979-May 15, 1980

Description: It has been observed that the exposure of dielectrics to electron beams can produce an electric field of sufficient magnitude to cause dielectric breakdown. The present investigations will be directed to calculate the electric field intensity in dielectrics under spherical and cylindrical geometries. In the spherical geometry the method of multiple images renders the full numerical calculation unnecessary, whereas in a finite length cylindrical geometry the full numerical calculation seems to b… more

Weighted linear least squares problem: an interval analysis approach to rank determination

Description: This is an extension of the work in SAND--80-0655 to the weighted linear least squares problem. Given the weighted linear least squares problem WAx approx. = Wb, where W is a diagonal weighting matrix, and bounds on the uncertainty in the elements of A, we define an interval matrix A/sup I/ that contains all perturbations of A due to these uncertainties and say that the problem is rank deficient if any member of A/sup I/ is rank deficient. It is shown that, if WA = QR is the QR decomposition of… more
