Final Technical Report for "Feature Extraction, Characterization, and Visualization for Protein Interaction via Geometric and Topological Methods"

Description: Shape analysis plays an important role in many applications. In particular, in molecular biology, analyzing molecular shapes is essential to the fundamental problem of understanding how molecules interact. This project aims at developing efficient and effective algorithms to characterize and analyze molecular structures using geometric and topological methods. Two main components of this project are (1) developing novel molecular shape descriptors; and (2) identifying and representing meaningfu… more

Geostatistical Inspired Metamodeling and Optimization of Nanoscale Analog Circuits

Description: The current trend towards miniaturization of modern consumer electronic devices significantly affects their design. The demand for efficient all-in-one appliances leads to smaller, yet more complex and powerful nanoelectronic devices. The increasing complexity in the design of such nanoscale Analog/Mixed-Signal Systems-on-Chip (AMS-SoCs) presents difficult challenges to designers. One promising design method used to mitigate the burden of this design effort is the use of metamodeling (surrogate… more

UNT: SubFinder: Combining Knowledge Sources for Automatic Lexical Substitution

Description: This paper describes the University of North Texas SubFinder system. The system is able to provide the most likely set of substitutes for a word in a given context, by combining several techniques and knowledge sources. SubFinder has successfully participated in the best and out of ten (oot) tracks in the SEMEVAL lexical substitution task, consistently ranking in the first or second place.

Finding Semantic Associations on Express Lane

Description: This paper introduces a new codification scheme for efficient computation of measures in semantic networks. The scheme is particularly useful for fast computation of semantic associations between words and implementation of an informational retrieval operator for efficient search in semantic spaces. Other applications may also be possible.

Elastic Face, An Anatomy-Based Biometrics Beyond Visible Cue

Description: This paper describes a face recognition method that is designed based on the consideration of anatomical and biomechanical characteristics of facial tissues. Elastic strain pattern inferred from face expression can reveal an individual's biometric signature associated with the underlying anatomical structure, and thus has the potential for face recognition. A method based on the continuum mechanics in finite element formulation is employed to compute the strain pattern. Experiments show very pr… more

Model-Based Nonrigid Motion Analysis Using Natural Feature Adaptive Mesh

Description: The success of nonrigid motion analysis using physical finite element model is dependent on the mesh that characterizes the object's geometric structure. We suggest a deformable mesh adapted to the natural features of images. The adaptive mesh requires much fewer number of nodes than the fixed mesh which was used in our previous work. We demonstrate the higher efficiency of the adaptive mesh in the context of estimating burn scar elasticity relative to normal skin elasticity using the observed … more

An experimental design to study decommitment in a collaborative multi-agent system in a scheduling domain

Description: This article describes the theoretical background and experimental design of new research based on previous multi-agent research on collaborative agents. The research extends the concept of agent decommitment into a resource scheduling domain. The problem is no longer time constrained, however, the number of agents is increased dramatically. The actual experimentation is yet to be performed. The authors state that results of the experimentation will be reported in a future article.
