Distribution of Aeromonas hydrophila in a South Carolina cooling reservoir. [Aeromonas hydrophila]

Description: Par Pond is a thermally enriched monomictic southeastern lake which receives heated effluent from a production nuclear reactor. Fish populations in the lake have lesions of epizooty from which Aeromonas spp. are readily isolated. Distribution and population densities of Aeromonas in the water column were measured along an oxygen and temperature gradient. Greater population densities of Aeromonas occurred below the oxygen chemocline when the lake was stratified. Survival of A. hydrophila under i… more

Qualitative and Quantitative Chromatographic Determination of Muscle Myosin Production in Control and Chronically Accelerated Chick Embryos

Description: The purpose of this investigation was to employ newly improved qualitative and quantitative chromatographic techniques to obtain purified myosin from 1 G and 3 G chick embryos and to determine if muscle myosin production either follows or precedes the unparallel bone growth during chronic acceleration as reported by several investigators.

Division of Energy Biosciences annual report and summaries of FY 1991 activities

Description: As a component of the Department of Energy, the Energy Biosciences (EB) program of the Office of Basic Energy Sciences supports long-term research aimed at addressing energy-related problems utilizing biological systems. There are three main components of the EB program. The first, Primary Biological Energy Conversion, concentrates on research on plant and microbial photosynthesis, but also deals with plant growth control, stress reactions, and interaction with pathogens. The second, Bioconvers… more

Workshop on stems and trunks in plant form and function. Final report

Description: This document is the final report on the workshop on stems and trunks in plant form and function relating to DOE grant DE-FG06-93ER20128 which took place at Oregon State University in February 1994. The resulting book is organized into four sections and a synthesis: roles of stem architecture in plant performance, roles of stems in transport and storage of water, roles of live stem cells in plant performance, and the roles of stems in preventing or reacting to response to plant injury. The synt… more

Neurospora experiment P-1037. Quarterly progress report to the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, October 1--December 15, 1966

Description: The main values of the 302 gantry exercise were to check the preparation of the Neurospora experiment and the spacecraft loading procedure under timed conditions and to provide final assurance that necessary operations can be completed with appropriate inspection in the allotted time. Because of the brief time interval between the 302 Gantry Exercise and the scheduled Biosatellite A flight, no attempt was made to assay for forward-mutation frequecies; however, biocompatibility tests were perfor… more

Water and Ion Eflux in Isolated Onion Roots

Description: The aims of this study were: (1) to determine simultaneously by means of a micro-potometric method the rates of water and various isotopic ion effluxes from isolated onion roots; (2) to determine and compare the effects of metabolic inhibitors on both processes simultaneously; (3) to ascertain the similarity or dissimilarity of mechanisms involved with these two processes; (4) to ascertain the role of active metabolism in each of these processes; (5) to shed light on possible gearing mechanism(… more

Survival and activity of Streptococcus faecalis and Escherichia coli in petroleum-contaminated tropical marine waters

Description: The in situ survival and activity of Streptococcus faecalis and Escherichia coli were studied using membrane diffusion chambers in tropical marine waters receiving oil refinery effluents. Protein synthesis, DNA synthesis, respiration or fermentation, INT reduced per cell, and ATP per cell were used to measure physiological activity. Cell densities decreased significantly over time at both sites for both S. faecalis and E. coli; however, no significant differences in survival pattern were observ… more

Incorporating Genomics and Bioinformatics across the Life Sciences Curriculum

Description: Undergraduate life sciences education needs an overhaul, as clearly described in the National Research Council of the National Academies publication BIO 2010: Transforming Undergraduate Education for Future Research Biologists. Among BIO 2010's top recommendations is the need to involve students in working with real data and tools that reflect the nature of life sciences research in the 21st century. Education research studies support the importance of utilizing primary literature, designing an… more

A Qualitative Survey of the Airborne Algae, Protozoa, and Bacteria at the Denton Sewage Treatment Plant

Description: This study had a three-fold purpose. First, it was decided to determine if algae and protozoa were emitted to the air at the Denton sewage treatment plant. The information obtained could be of future importance in the fields of algal and protozoan ecology and public health. Second, it was decided to make a survey of the airborne bacteria at this plant. Some researchers have described bacterial air contamination at similar sewage treatment plants, but the one in Denton has not been studied. Thir… more

An Investigation of Naturally Occurring Tastes and Odors from Fresh Waters

Description: The Problem of the cause and control of tastes and odors in water supplies has been the subject of a great many investigations during the last half-century; however, many questions in this field remain to be answered. Theories relating to the cause of tastes and odors occurring in water are still rather numerous and, at present, only a few of them are compatible. Although several procedures have been employed for the eradication of tastes and odors from water supplies, none of them are complete… more
