On the Structure of Sperm Whale Myoglobin. II. The Tryptic Hydrolysis of the Denatured Protein

Description: This report discusses the tryptic hydrolysis of heat-denatured sperm whale myoglobin resulting in two groups of peptides which accounts for the amino acid residues in the parent protein molecule.

The Effect of Carbon Monoxide on the Growth of an Aquatic Streptomycete

Description: The major purpose of this investigation was to determine the effect of carbon monoxide on the development of various morphological phases of a single isolate of the aquatic streptomycetes and to elucidate the physiological differences between terminal respiration in the primary and secondary stages. A secondary purpose was to repeat the work of Michael Lee Higgins involving the effect of anaerobiosis on the growth of the organism.

The Effects of Hexadecanol on the Microbiota of Lake Hefner

Description: It seemed desirable to investigate more fully the effect of hexadecanol on the microbial population of a reservoir. It was the purpose of this investigation to determine the effect of hexadecanol on the micro-biota of Lake Hefner, to ascertain which organisms were stimulated by hexadecanol both in the laboratory and the reservoir, and to investigate the degradation of hexadecanol by microorganisms selected from Lake Hefner.

A Bacteriological Survey of a Freshwater Reservoir

Description: In this study organisms that can be subcultured from lake water, using a prescribed procedure, limit, to an extent, the population, or portions of the population, that can be monitored. In essence, what is taking place is that a set of conditions is set forth and a study is made of the bacteria that will grow under these prescribed conditions.

Factors Involved in the Antibiotic Sensitivity of Staphylococcus Aureus

Description: It was the purpose of the present investigation to determine if sensitivity to other antibiotics can likewise be affected by subjecting S. aureus to heparin contact. It is of special interest in this problem to determine whether heparin in some manner affects the combining process of penicillin with the cells of several strains of S. aureus.

Some Relationships between Certain Aquatic Actinomycetes and Bacillus Cereus

Description: The purpose of this investigation is to determine if there was a metabolic relationship between the actinomycetes and the gram positive, spore-forming becilli in surface waters, and, if such a relationship was evident, to relate the association to the disappearances of typical actinomycete tastes and odors from waters.

Microbiotic Cycles in Lake Hefner

Description: The purposes of this paper are 1) to determine the microbiotic cycles which occur in Lake Hefner in order to form a basis for ascertaining the effects of future additions of evaporation control chemicals on the biological life of this reservoir, and 2) to make a generalization as to the microbiotic cycles which might occur in Southwestern reservoirs.

An Investigation of Gas Chromatographic Separation of Tastes and Odors Produced by Actinomycetes

Description: It is the purpose of this thesis to evaluate a few selected gas chromatographic materials for the separation of odorants produced by an actinomycete culture under laboratory conditions. Also to compare the results obtained with concentrated solutions of a surface water containing similar odors under natural conditions.
