Vinyl Coating of Graphite Plates for Ultrasonic Inspection

Description: A process has been developed for application of a thin, adherent vinyi plastic coating to graphite plates to prevent absorption of coupling fluids'' used in ultrasonic inspection. The plates are preheated and dipped mechanically in a fluid plastisol, and the resulting coating is fused in an infra-red heater. No significant attenuation of ultrasonic impulse results from presence of the coating. After inspection, the vinyl sheath may be easily stripped from the plate. (auth)

REPORT ON THE PROCESSING OF PITCHBLENDE

Description: A detailed description of the processing of pitchblende ores used at the Port Hope, Canada, refinery is given including both the recovery and purification of U and Fu. The health hazards present in the processing are discussed, and recommendations are made which will insure adequate health protection. (L.T.W.)

Interim Memorandum Report on Filter Development and Discussion on Availability of Materials

Description: A preliminary report on development of filter paper for use in A.E.C. operations is presented. Filters for use in removing harmful dusts or radioactive matter from the air discharged from various operations or for other uses are described. The main fiber furnished for the paper is a specially treated wood pulp with an addition of asbestos. Filters of higher or lower efficiencies with corresponding changes in static resistance can readily be made by modifying the manufacturing formula. (J.R.D.)

Temperature Dependency of Some of the Thermodynamical Properties of Aqueous Binary-Mixture Systems

Description: The temperature dependence of the refractive index and the density of aqueous binary mixtures of water and ethyl alcohol (C₂H₅OH) were measured by using a modified Michelson interferometer and a narrow glass capillary tube over the temperature range of 278≤T≤353 K for solutions of 100, 75,65, 50, 25, 10 and 0 volume percent ethyl alcohol. The temperature was cycled over both increasing and decreasing directions to explore hysteresis in the cycling. The data are discussed and compared with the L… more

Miniature Chemical Sensor combining Molecular Recognition with Evanescent Wave Cavity Ring-Down Spectroscopy

Description: To address the chemical sensing needs of DOE, a new class of chemical sensors is being developed that enables qualitative and quantitative, remote, real-time, optical diagnostics of chemical species in hazardous gas, liquid, and semi-solid phases by employing evanescent wave cavity ring-down spectroscopy (EW-CRDS). The feasibility and sensitivity of EW-CRDS was demonstrated previously under Project No.60231. The objective of this project is to enhance the selectivity and domain of application o… more

Colloid-Facilitated Transport of Radionuclides through the Vadose Zone

Description: This project seeks to improve the basic understanding of colloid and colloid-facilitated transport of Cs in the vadose zone. The specific objectives are: (1) Determine the structure, composition, and surface charge characteristics of colloidal particles formed under conditions similar to those occurring during leakage of waste typical of Hanford tank supernatants into soils and sediments surrounding the tanks. (2) Characterize the mutual interactions between colloids, contaminant, and soil matr… more

Correlation of Chemisorption and Electronic Effects for Metal/Oxide Interfaces: Transducing Principles for Temperature-Programmed Gas Microsensors

Description: This Report discusses progress and accomplishments during the initial 8 months (October 1, 1998 through May 31, 1999) of a 3-year project. Work is being performed through a collaboration between NIST and the Institute for Systems Research at the University of Maryland (PI: Professor T. J. McAvoy). This three year project has a goal of producing a scientific database for conductometric sensing materials and using this information to advance gas microsensor technology. The technology will use arr… more
