Hydrology and geochemistry of thermal ground water in southwestern Idaho and north-central Nevada

Description: The study area occupies about 14,500 square miles in southwestern Idaho and north-central Nevada. Thermal ground water occurs under artesian conditions, in discontinuous or compartmented zones, in igneous or sedimentary rocks of Tertiary age. Ground-water movement is generally northward. Temperatures of the ground water range from about 30/sup 0/ to more than 80/sup 0/C. Electrolytic Dissolution of Power Reactor Fuels in Nitric Acid

Description: The electrolytic oxidation in nitric acid of stainless steel, zirconium, Zircaloy-2, zirconium- uranium alloy, aluminum, and uranium - molybdenum alloy was demonstrated on a laboratory scale. The rate of chemical dissolution of UO/ sub 2/ in nitric acid was measured. Corrosion of stainless steel by these dissolver solutions was measured and found to be negligible. Adsorption of Krypton and Xenon by Various Materials

Description: The adsorptive capacities of various inorganic adsorbents and activated charcoals for krypton and xenon were determined. Columbia-G activated charcoal had the highest capacity for both krypton and xenon at pressures from 0.01 to 125 mm Hg and temperaturens from 2 to 85 deg C. If a value of 1 is assigned to the capacity of this charcoal at 28 deg C for krypton, other charcoals range from 0.63 to 0.84, molecular sieves (except 4A) from 0.11 to 0.20, and some silica genls from 0.05 to 0.07. Mass Transfer Coefficients and Interfacial Area in a One Stage Pulse Column

Description: Over-all mass transfer coefficients were determined independently of the interfacial area by considering the operation of the pulse column to be a stage- wise process. (The fate of nuclides in natural water systems)

Description: Our research at Yale on the fate of nuclides in natural water systems has three components to it: the study of the atmospheric precipitation of radionuclides and other chemical species; the study of the behavior of natural radionuclides in groundwater and hydrothermal systems; and understanding the controls on the distribution of radionuclides and stable nuclides in the marine realm. Assessment of the theory and hypotheses of the acidification of watersheds

Sodium Fluozirconate Precipitation Process for Zirconium Fuels. Part 1. Laboratory Development

Description: Precipitation, evaporation, and extraction feed preparation conditions are established for the removal of zirconium and fluoride from fuel dissolver product solutions by the addition of sodium formate. The solar flare of 18 August 1979: Incoherent scatter radar data and photochemical model comparisons

Description: Measurements of electron density at seven D-region altidues were made with the Arecibo radar during a Class-X solar flare on 18 August 1979. Measurements of solar x-ray fluxes during the same period were available from the GOES-2 satellite (0.5 to 4 /angstrom/ and 1 to 8 /angstrom/) and from ISEE-3 (in four bands between 26 and 400 keV). Role of groundwater oxidation potential and radiolysis on waste glass performance in crystalline repository environments

Description: Laboratory experiments have shown that groundwater conditions in a Stripa granite repository will be as reducing as those in a basalt repository. The final oxidation potential (Eh) at 70/sup 0/C for Stripa groundwater deaerated and equilibrated with crystalline granite was -0.45V. In contrast, the oxidation potential at 60/sup 0/C for Grande Ronde groundwater equilibrated with basalt was -0.40V. Description: Laboratory-scale tests on methods for recovering uranium and thorium from graphite-base reactor fuel elements are reported. The 90% HNO/sub 3/ process, which involves simultaneous disintegration and leaching in 21 M HNO/sub 3/, is applicable to all fuel elenments which do not contain coated fuel particles.
