Description: As a result of the evaporation explosion in the Radiochemical Processing Pilot Plant on Nov. 20, 1959, two cells were contaminated with plutonium to a transferable level of 10/sup 8/ d/m/100 sq cm. The area involved measures 40 by 20 by 27 ft high with a total surface area, including equipment, of 10,000 sq ft. Rohm and Haas: Company Uses Knoxville Plant Assessment Results to Develop Best Practices Guidelines and Benchmark for Its Other Sites (Revised)

Description: Rohm and Haas conducted a plant-wide energy assessment at its Knoxville, Tennessee, chemicals manufacturing facility. The assessment identified potential annual energy savings of nearly 47,000 MMBtu in steam and fuel and 11,000 MWh in electricity. Annual cost savings were estimated at almost$1.5 million. Kinetic and Modeling Investigation on Dilute Sulfuric Acid and Hot Water Fractionation of Selected Biomass Plan

Description: Subcontractor developed a processing model to evaluate and optimize an NREL-developed biomass pretreatment technology. The technology, taking advantage of the biphasic nature of hemicellulose in pretreatment, is a two-stage, reverse-flow, shrinking-bed system. The contract simulation found that this system could increase sugar yield by about 5%, with bed shrinkage of 27% and sugar yield of 95% at optimum conditions.

Development of Silicon-Modified 48 Wt. % U-Al Alloys for Aluminum Plate-Type Fuel Elements

Description: The casting procedures, mechanical working characteristics, composite fuel plate fabrication, and fuel element assembly methods for a nominal 48 wt.% U- 3 wt.% Si -AP alloy are examined.
