Influence of Bath Composition at Acidic pH on Electrodeposition of Nickel-Layered Silicate Nanocomposites for Corrosion Protection

Description: This article describes how nickel-layered silicate nanocomposite films were electrochemically deposited using pulsed potentiostatic conditions from an acidic plating bath containing exfoliated layered silicate to enhance adhesion to the substrate, corrosion resistance, and mechanical properties.

Discovery of higher-order topological insulators using the spin Hall conductivity as a topology signature

Description: This article shows a connection between spin Hall effect and HOTIs using a combination of ab initio calculations and tight-binding modeling. The model demonstrates how a non-zero bulk midgap spin Hall conductivity (SHC) emerges within the HOTI phase. This work guides novel experimental and theoretical advances towards higher-order topological insulator realization and applications.

Rediscovery of the Elements: The Rare Earths - The Beginnings

Description: This article explores the rare earths, the chemically similar elements that occupy the f-block of the Periodic Table and the Group III chemical family. The articles shows the locations that certain rare earths were originally found. It also gives details on where the elements can be found currently, as well as major production areas. The cover of the Fall 2015 Hexagon journal (Vol. 106, Issue 3) features the Mountain Pass rare earth ore body in Southern California, which is mentioned in the ar… more

The Multi-reference Correlation Consistent Composite Approach: A New Vista In Quantitative Prediction Of Thermochemical And Spectroscopic Properties

Description: The multi-reference correlation consistent composite approach (MR-ccCA) was designed to reproduce the accuracy of more computationally intensive ab initio quantum mechanical methods like MR-ACPF-DK/aug-cc-pCV?Z-DK, albeit at a significantly reduced cost. In this dissertation, the development and applications of the MR-ccCA method and a variant of its single reference equivalent (the relativistic pseudopotential ccCA method) are reported. MR-ccCA is shown to predict the energetic properties of r… more
