Testing of Potential Bearing Materials in an Argon Atmosphere of Low Humidity

Description: Bearing materials for use in the Metallurgy Division Sector of the EBR- 11 Fuel Cycle Plant must operate without lubrication in an argon atmosphere of low humidity (dew-point of --50 deg C or less) and high gamma activity. To select suitable materials, a test program, in which samples of materials known to be radiation resistant were tested for wear resistance in an argon atmosphere containing less than 30 ppm water by volume, was initiated. The criterion by which wear resistance was judged is … more

The Manufacture of Supplemental Depleted Fuel Rods for Fcf Startup

Description: Approximately 2000 supplemental rods were made for use in EBR-II Fuel Cycle Facility startup tests. They were made in the same manner as Core-I fuel rods but using partially depleted pins instead of fuel pins. A duplex'' or double melting operation was used for Core-I production. The alloys were first melted together and cast in and ingot mold. The ingot was then remelted and injection castto produce fuel pins. In order to simplify the operation, a single melt, or simplex'' operation, alloying … more

Fabrication of Ebr-Ii, Core-I Fuel Pins

Description: A total of 11,117 enriched uranium-5 wt.% fissium alloy fuel pins was manufactured for EBR-II, Core I. These were made from a synthetic fission product alloy of nonradioactive elements, natural uranium, and enriched uranium. The material was supplied as precast billets. The manufacturing methods were developed for the EBR-III Fuel Cycle Facility. Experimental refabrication equipment was used to production test both the methods and the equipment. The billets were induction melted and pressure ca… more

Manufacture of Fuel Plates for the Experimental Boiling Water Reactor

Description: From Abstract: "Discussed in the paper are the production of the uranium fuel alloy, the fabrication of the cladding components from Zircaloy-2 ingot, the assembly, welding, evacuation, and sealing of the cladding billets, the jacketing of the cladding billets with steel, and the roll bonding, heat treatment, stripping, and cleaning of the fuel plates. Evaluation of the fuel plates produced is also included."

Development of Methods for the Refabrication of Ebr-Ii Fuel Elements. Part I. Engineering Considerations for Ebr-Ii Fuel Refabrication. Part Ii. Development of Injection Casting Methods and Equipment. Part Iii. Development of Fuel Pin Processing Methods and Equipment. Part Iv. Assembly, Welding, and Leak Testing Ebr-Ii Fuel Rods. Part v. Dodium Bonding and Bond Testing Ebr-Ii Fu

Description: The development of remote fabrication methods and equipment in which the cooling periods, chemical fission product separation, and complete decontamination of the fuel is not required is discussed. A process designed around precision casting in multiple, glass molds served as a basis for design of refabrication equipment. The injection casting process is used. Procedures and equipment were developed for the remote manufacture of right-cylindrical, uranium alloy fuel pins from the castings. Asse… more
