Computational Biology, Advanced Scientific Computing, and Emerging Computational Architectures

Description: This CRADA was established at the start of FY02 with $200 K from IBM and matching funds from DOE to support post-doctoral fellows in collaborative research between International Business Machines and Oak Ridge National Laboratory to explore effective use of emerging petascale computational architectures for the solution of computational biology problems. 'No cost' extensions of the CRADA were negotiated with IBM for FY03 and FY04.

Description: The 100-F-52 waste site consisted of the soil under and around the former 146-FR Radioecology and Aquatic Biology Laboratory. The laboratory was used for studies of the effects of pre-reactor and post-reactor process water on fish eggs, young fish, and other small river creatures of interest. Using Femtosecond Laser Subcellular Surgery as a Tool to Study Cell Biology

Description: Research on cellular function and regulation would be greatly advanced by new instrumentation using methods to alter cellular processes with spatial discrimination on the nanometer-scale. We present a novel technique for targeting submicrometer sized organelles or other biologically important regions in living cells using femtosecond laser pulses. Ultra-fast Coherent Diffraction Imaging of Single Particles, Clusters and Biomolecules

Description: Theoretical studies and simulations predict that with a very short and very intense coherent X-ray pulse a single diffraction pattern may be recorded from a large macromolecule, a virus, or a cell without the need for crystalline periodicity. Geographical and Temporal Dynamics of Chaetocnema Pulicaria and Their Role in Stewart's Disease of Corn in Iowa
