Airborne Dust Cloud Measurements at the INL National Security Test Range

Description: On July 11, 2007, a surface, high-explosive test (<20,000 lb TNT-equivalent) was carried out at the National Security Test Range (NSTR) on the Idaho National Laboratory (INL) Site. Aircraft-mounted rapid response (1-sec) particulate monitors were used to measure airborne PM-10 concentrations directly in the dust cloud and to develop a PM-10 emission factor that could be used for subsequent tests at the NSTR. Aerial Radiation Detection

Description: An airborne system designed for the detection of radioactive sources on the soil surface from an aircraft normally senses gamma rays emitted by the source. F-111 windscreen machining. Final report

Description: Studies were conducted to determine the feasibility of improving the optical image transmitted through a military aircraft windscreen by using single-point diamond turning. Reduced warpage (waviness) of the windscreen surfaces ensures that a more accurate optical image is presented to the aircraft pilot. Machining the acrylic surface was accomplished with slightly impared image transmissibility. The use of this technique as a potential production process is discussed.

Damage detection and health monitoring of operational structures

Description: Initial damage detection/health monitoring experiments have been performed on three different operational structures: a fracture critical bridge, a composite wind turbine blade, and an aging aircraft. Analysis of vortex-induced counter torque and fin pressure on a finned body of revolution.

Description: Finned bodies of revolution firing lateral jets in flight may experience lower spin rates than predicted. This reduction in spin rate is a result of vortices generated by the interaction between the lateral jets and freestream air flowing past the body.
