Development and Demonstration of Compound Parabolic Concentrators for Solar Thermal Power Generation and Heating and Cooling Applications, Progress Report: July-December 1975

Description: Progress report describing the development of Compound Parabolic Concentrators (CPC). A tenfold concentrator with a cavity receiver was constructed and tested. The optical efficiency was very good (65 percent), but the thermal performance was degraded by heat losses of the cavity receiver. A summary of the results of subcontracts described in the previous progress report are presented, and the influence of these results on ANL programs is noted.

Description: Progress report describing the research and management efforts of Argonne National Laboratory's program on high-performance lithium/metal sulfide batteries during the period July-December 1975. The batteries are being developed for two applications: off-peak energy storage in electric utility networks and electric-vehicle propulsion. The battery designs for the two applications differ, particularly in cell configuration and electrode design because of the differing performance requirements.

Tritium effluent control project progress report, July--September 1975. [Tritiated liquid waste decontamination by molecular excitation, electrolysis of high-level tritiated water, and catalytic exchange detritiation studies]

Description: In the Tritiated Liquid Waste Decontamination (Molecular Excitation) program, it was found that a 1/4'' Nd:YAG amplifier and a Faraday rotator isolator must be added to the oscillator to obtain the required power for the laser excitation experiments. The isotopic selectivity of the two-photon dissociation process was examined in more detail. The selectivity or ratio of HTO to H/sub 2/O molecules that are photodissociated was found to be on the order of 25, which is inadequate for application to… more

Quarterly progress report on fission product release from LWR fuel, October--December 1976

Description: The series of Control Tests has been completed. These tests were conducted to evaluate the suitability of the apparatus design, to test the various fission product characterization devices and methods, and to establish the behavior of known chemical species which are expected to be encountered in the latter phases of the program. Those tests which utilized either CsI or Cs/sub 2/O were found to yield deposits of hydrated CsOH in the moist environment. With the completion of the Control Test Ser… more

Assay of PBX 9501. Progress report, October--December 1975

Description: An infrared spectrophotometric method is used for determining Estane in PBX 9501. In this method a 1 g sample of 9501 is extracted with 1,2-dichloroethane. The mixture is mechanically shaken for one hour, centrifuged, and an aliquot of the supernatant is transferred to a 0.50 mm NaCl cell. The IR spectrum at 1717 cm/sup -1/ is recorded, and the percent Estane calculated from the measured peak height. The HMX remaining from the dichloroethane extraction is determined gravimetrically, and the nit… more

Slow PBX and plant wave lens development. Progress report, July--September 1975

Description: Work has been completed on three each pressable plane wave lens designs. One of these, of the P/040 configuration using pressable Comp B-3 and 76/24 BN/TNT baratol, was completed and reported some time ago. Results of this lens are being reported here for completeness of this report. Work was recently completed on a P/081 lens design using these same materials. A higher index lens of the P/040 configuration was also recently finalized. This lens design uses PBX 9404 as the fast component and 85… more

Stability of density in small pressings of LX-14. Progress report, July--September 1975

Description: Research conducted during July to October 1975 on compacting of chemical explosives is reported. Bartherm is an ancillary pressing process that can be used to increase and equalize the as-pressed density of PBX parts. The process is relatively new and it was not known if the induced density changes were permanent. Small parts that were processed by the bartherm technique have not experienced a change of density in approximately one and one-half years of observation and the density increase appe… more

Generalized shaped charge design. Final report, October 1975--October 1976

Description: A series of shaped charge devices were designed and tested. The tests showed that by combining detailed Lagrange calculations of liner collapse with simplified incompressible flow models, the explosive and liner contours of the charge can be tailored to yield either constant velocity jets, stretching jets, or converging jets. Measured liner velocity was within 10 percent of theory, except for details near the apex and close to slide planes. It was found that the effects of liner convergence and… more

Description: The objective is to determine the rate and mechanism of (1) sulfur poisoning and (2) of regeneration of metal catalysts used in synthesis gas conversion to hydrocarbon products. Auger electron spectroscopy (AES) is used for surface analysis, and in-situ reaction studies of deactivation and regeneration are combined with microreactor studies to quantify sulfur poisoning. An all-glass internal recirculation microreactor has been designed, fabricated, debugged and integrated into a metal-free feed… more
