Cold iron cos THETA magnet option for the SSC

Description: We review first the evolution over the past several years of a cold iron, high field cos THETA magnet design option for the SSC. We note the collaborative approach pursued by BNL and LBL on the 2-in-1 option, and the culmination of this effort in the tests of the BNL 4.5 m model magnets. Next, we discuss the subsequent 1-in-1 option being pursued jointly by BNL, Fermilab and LBL.

On-line uranium determination using remote fiber fluorimetry

Description: Remote Fiber Fluorimetry (RFF) is being developed at Savannah River Laboratory for the on-line determination of uranium in plant process streams. A prototype system suitable for plant use has been designed and is being built. RFF has four major components: a laser, an optical fiber, an optrode, and a detector. Essentially, an optical fiber carries laser radiation from a laser to a process sampling point. An optrode (the optical analog of an electrode) couples the laser light into a sample solut… more

Operational history of Fermilab's 1500 W refrigerator used for energy saver magnet production testing

Description: The 1500 W helium refrigerator system utilizes two oil-injected screw compressors staged to feed a liquid nitrogen pre-cooled cold box. Refrigeration is provided by two Sulzer TGL-22 magnetic/gas bearing turbines. The refrigerator feeds six magnet test stands via a 10,000 L dewar and subcooler equipped distribution box. The design of the controls has permitted the system to be routinely operated 24 hours/day, seven days/week with only five operators. It has operated approximately 90% of the 4-1… more

Comparison of predicted and measured fission product behavior in the Fort St. Vrain HTGR during the first three cycles of operation

Description: Fission product release from the reactor core has been predicted by the reference design methods and compared with reactor surveillance measurements and with the results of postirradiation examination (PIE) of spent FSV fuel elements. Overall, the predictive methods have been shown to be conservative: the predicted fission gas release at the end of Cycle 3 is about five times higher than observed. The dominant source of fission gas release is as-manufactured, heavy-metal contamination; in-servi… more

New rf power system for SuperHILAC

Description: The upgraded rf system for the SuperHILAC is now operational using 9 new tetrode amplifiers. Each amplifier can produce in excess of 1MW of 70 Mhz pulsed rf power. Ferrite is used to decouple the screen grid circuit and to absorb parasitic oscillations. This results in a very stable amplifier with reasonable gain. This system uses a common 8 MW anode power supply and crowbar system. Overall system efficiency has been increased significantly. We project a 3 year payback on the equipment cost, re… more

Metal vapor vacuum arc (MEVVA) high current ion source

Description: An ion source is described in which a metal vapor vacuum arc is used to create the plasma from which the ions are extracted. Beams of a variety of ions have been produced, ranging from lithium up to uranium. At an extraction voltage of 25 kV we've measured an ion beam current of over 1 Ampere, with over 550 ema of the beam in an emittance of 0.07..pi.. cm. mradians (normalized). The ion charge state distribution varies with cathode material and with arc power; for uranium a typical distribution… more

Improvement of the high voltage properties of the Fermilab electrostatic septa

Description: In the Fermilab Tevatron Switchyard proton beam splits ae initiated by a wire array electrostatic septum. At 1 TeV energy, and with fields limited to 50 kV/cm, an electrostatic septum more than 20 meters in length is required to produce the required angular separation between the beams for the Proton and Neutrino/Meson lines. New techniques have been investigated that will allow reliable operation at fields above 75 kV/cm with resultant beam line economy. Changes in construction and conditionin… more

Predicting fuel performance for SP-100 conditions

Description: This paper reports on methods for analyzing fuel designs proposed for the thermionic and thermoelectric concepts for SP-100 application. The proposed fuel design for the thermionic concept consisted of fully-enriched oxide fuel clad in chemical vapor deposition (CVD) tungsten, which also served as the emitter for the thermionic fuel element (TFE). The fuel density was 95% of theoretical with the linear heat rate flattened radially by removing fuel from the center of the fuel pellet. The fuel in… more

Effect of plants on sunspace passive solar heating

Description: The effect of plants on sunspace thermal performance is investigated, based on experiments done in Los Alamos using two test rooms with attached sunspaces, which were essentially identical except for the presence of plants in one. Performance is related to plant transpiration, evaporation from the soil, condensation on the glazing and the absorbtance of solar energy by the lightweight leaves. Performance effects have been quantified by measurements of auxiliary heat consumption in the test room… more
