Vapor Containment in the Oak Ridge Research Reactor

Description: Containment of the ORR is attained by means of a ventilation system which is capable of exhausting air from the building at a rate sufficient to ensure that all leakage of air at ground level is into the building. The exhaust air is treated by scrubbing and filtration and is discharged from a large stack at a height and velocity sufficient to guarantee that meteorological dispersion will reduce the resulting concentration of radioactive material to an acceptable level. Factors involved in selec… more

Problems Encountered During Four Years of ORR Operation

Description: The over-all design and operation of ORR is reviewed in the light of four years of operating experience. Items discussed consist of the reactor components and instrumentation, reactor and pool cooling systems (including system cleanup), the emergency systems for electric power and reactor cooling, the waste-disposal systems (liquid, gaseous, and solid), and the building, itself. The ORR was the first of a class of reactors which combined the features of both the pool-reactor and tank-reactor ty… more

Enhanced durability and reactivity for zinc ferrite desulfurization sorbent

Description: AMAX Research Development Center (AMAX R D) has been investigating methods for enhancing the reactivity and durability of the zinc ferrite desulfurization sorbent. Zinc ferrite sorbents are intended for use in desulfurization of hot coal gas in integrated gasification combined cycle (IGCC) or molten carbonate fuel cell (MCFC) applications. For the present program, the reactivity of the sorbent may be defined as its sulfur sorption capacity at the breakthrough point and at saturation in a bench-… more

NOVANET: communications network for a control system

Description: NOVANET is a control system oriented fiber optic local area network that was designed to meet the unique and often conflicting requirements of the Nova laser control system which will begin operation in 1984. The computers and data acquisition devices that form the distributed control system for a large laser fusion research facility need reliable, high speed communications. Both control/status messages and experimental data must be handled. A subset of NOVANET is currently operating on the two… more

Setup and performance of RHIC for the 2008 run with deuteron-gold collisions.

Description: This year (2008) deuterons and gold ions were collided in the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) at Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL) for the first time since 2003. The setup and performance of the collider for the 2008 run is reviewed with a focus on improvements that have led to an order of magnitude increase in luminosity over that achieved in the 2003 run.

RHIC polarized proton performance in run-8.

Description: During Run-8, the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) provided collisions of spin-polarized proton beams at two interaction regions. Helical spin rotators at these two interaction regions were used to control the spin orientation of both beams at the collision points. Physics data were taken with different orientations of the beam polarization. We present recent developments and improvements as well as the luminosity and polarization performance achieved during Run-8.

RHIC and its upgrade programmes.

Description: As the first hadron accelerator and collider consisting of two independent superconducting rings RHIC has operated with a wide range of beam energies and particle species. After a brief review of the achieved performance the presentation will give an overview of the plans, challenges and status of machine upgrades, that range from a new heavy ion pre-injector and beam cooling at 100 GeV to a high luminosity electron-ion collider.

Operational experience with a near-integer working point at RHIC.

Description: During the RHIC polarized proton run in N 2006 it became evident that the luminosity performance is limited by the beam-beam effect. With a working point between 213 and 7/10, and the necessity to mirror the tunes of the two RHIC rings at the diagonal, the beam with a horizontal tune closest to 213 showed poor lifetime. To overcome this limitation, a near-integer working point has been proposed. Tracking studies performed at both working points showed a larger dynamic aperture near the integer … more

Integrated Global Orbit Feedback with Slow and Fast Correctors

Description: The NSLS-II Light Source, which is planned to be built at Brookhaven National Laboratory, provides users with ultra-bright synchrotron radiation sources and is designed for horizontal beam emittances < 1 nm. Full utilization of the very small emittances and beam sizes requires sub-micron orbit stability in the storage ring. This can be provided by means of a wide bandwidth orbit feedback system. Traditional approach is to utilize a uniform set of fast correctors or use two separate systems w… more

Experience with IBS-suppression lattice in RHIC

Description: An intra-beam scattering (IBS) is the limiting factor of the luminosity lifetime for RHIC operating with heavy ions. In order to suppress the IBS we designed and implemented new lattice with higher betatron tunes. This lattice had been developed during last three years and had been used for gold ions in yellow ring of the RHIC during d-Au part of the RHIC Run-8. The use of this lattice allowed both significant increases in the luminosity lifetime and the luminosity levels via reduction of beta-… more

Large File System Backup: NERSC Global File System Experience

Description: NERSC's Global File system (NGF), accessible from all compute systems at NERSC, holds files and data from many scientific projects. A full backup of this file system to our High Performance Storage System (HPSS) is performed periodically. Disk storage usage by projects at NERSC has grown seven fold over a two year period, from ~;;20TB in June 2006 to ~;;140 TB in June 2008. The latest full backup took about 13 days and more than 200 T10k tape cartridges (.5 TB capacity). Petabyte file systems a… more

Modeling of Fission Gas Release in UO2

Description: A two-stage gas release model was examined to determine if it could provide a physically realistic and accurate model for fission gas release under Prometheus conditions. The single-stage Booth model [1], which is often used to calculate fission gas release, is considered to be oversimplified and not representative of the mechanisms that occur during fission gas release. Two-stage gas release models require saturation at the grain boundaries before gas is release, leading to a time delay in rel… more

A General Methodology for Evaluation of Carbon Sequestration Activities and Carbon Credits

Description: A general methodology was developed for evaluation of carbon sequestration technologies. In this document, we provide a method that is quantitative, but is structured to give qualitative comparisons despite changes in detailed method parameters, i.e., it does not matter what ''grade'' a sequestration technology gets but a ''better'' technology should receive a better grade. To meet these objectives, we developed and elaborate on the following concepts: (1) All resources used in a sequestration … more

Comparison of Tracking Codes for the International Linear Collider

Description: In an effort to compare beam dynamics and create a ''benchmark'' for Dispersion Free Steering (DFS) a comparison was made between different International Linear Collider (ILC) simulation programs while performing DFS. This study consisted of three parts. Firstly, a simple betatron oscillation was tracked through each code. Secondly, a set of component misalignments and corrector settings generated from one program was read into the others to confirm similar emittance dilution. Thirdly, given th… more

The Performance of a Fast Closed Orbit Feedback System with Combined Fast and Slow Correctors

Description: For NSLSII closed orbit feedback system, in order to limit the noise caused by digital step changes of the power supplies in the feedback system, the angular kick corresponding to the last bit of the power supplies for the fast correctors must be smaller than 3 nrad [1]. On the other hand, to carry out closed orbit alignment or orbit correction after a long term drift, they need strong correctors with 0.8 mrad kick strength. In order to avoid the requirement of correctors with both large streng… more
