Historical perspective of mass storage

Description: The need to store information is older than civilization itself. Primitive peoples recorded information about their lives, activities, and environment as early as the Paleolithic Era, and some of these records are still extant. Beginning with these records, this paper will review some of the symbolisms, media, and tools used for recording information through the major ages of technology, with emphasis on the very early history of the recording of information.

Considerations for imaging system implementation in a networked environment

Description: Information storage and retrieval systems that utilize raster images are increasing in popularity on a wide variety of platforms. Image systems typically involve the transmission of data files in the 100 KiloByte to 1 MegaByte range to users on specialized workstations who expect retrieval in a matter of seconds. The results of the pilot study outlines the potential for the sharing of image information among various platforms and systems, and sets expectations regarding the level of integration. more

Proposed alternatives for a DOE-wide occupational radiation exposure information system

Description: The Radiation Exposure Information Reporting System (REIRS) was initiated by the Atomic Energy Commission (AEC) in 1968. While the system has provided a general overview of radiation exposures associated with AEC/ERDA/DOE operations and has satisfied the original intent for a central information system, the need for more detailed information has become evident. The alternatives addressed for a radiation exposure information system were no change in current system, clarification of DOE Order for… more

The new metals and alloys compilation, a powerful materials analysis tool

Description: A new compilation of Metals and Alloys indexes of powder diffraction and structural data has been completed. This compilation is designed to make characterization of metallic and related nonmetallic materialsl easier and more accurate. To achieve these goals, the existing Metals and Alloys Powder Diffraction File (M A PDF) contents were greatly increased to make the M A PDF contents similar to standard metallurgical references. Then six new indexes based on the M A PDF were developed.

Querying genomic databases

Description: A natural-language interface has been developed that retrieves genomic information by using a simple subset of English. The interface spares the biologist from the task of learning database-specific query languages and computer programming. Currently, the interface deals with the E. coli genome. It can, however, be readily extended and shows promise as a means of easy access to other sequenced genomic databases as well.

Logical and physical database design within a full-text environment

Description: This paper describes the problems and solutions encountered in the design of logical and physical data bases within a full-text environment. A full-text environment can be defined as data bases that store both citation information as well as actual document text. The problems/solutions encountered were a result of the necessity to integrate distinct physical data bases into a single logical data base without the assistance of a Data Base Management System that is capable of physical data base i… more

Geopressured geothermal bibliography. Volume II (geopressure thesaurus). Second Edition

Description: This thesaurus of terminology associated with the geopressured geothermal energy field has been developed as a part of the Geopressured Geothermal Information System data base. It is a compilation of terms displaying synomymous, hierarchical, and other relationships between terms. These terms, which are called descriptors, constitute the special language of the information retrieval system - the system vocabulary. The function of this thesaurus is to provide a standardized vocabulary for the in… more

Interactive computer graphics displays for hierarchical data structures. [Description of THESGRAF, in FORTRAN IV for CDC and IBM computers]

Description: An interactive computer graphical display program was developed as an aid to user visualization and manipulation of hierarchically structured data systems such as thesauri. In the present configuration, a thesaurus term and its primary and secondary conceptual neighbors are presented to the user in tree graph form on a CRT; the user then designates, via light pen or keyboard, any of the neighbors as the next term of interest and receives a new display centered on this term. By successive specif… more

Savannah River Laboratory data banks for risk assessment

Description: The Savannah River Laboratory maintains a series of computerized data banks primarily as an aid in probabilistic risk assessment studies for the Savannah River Plant (SRP) facilities. These include component failure rates, generic incidents, and reports of specific deviations from normal operating conditions. In addition to providing data for probability studies, these banks have served as a valuable aid in trend analyses, equipment histories, process hazards analyses, consequence assessments, … more

Hypertext-based integration for nuclear plant maintenance and operations

Description: A methodology is presented that uses fuzzy graphs in the emerging paradigm of hypertext for the purpose of integrating data, information and multifaceted knowledge resources abounding in power plant operations and maintenance. A hypertext system is viewed as a set of nodes and links where with each link we associate membership functions embodying context-dependent criteria for navigating large information spaces. A general framework for navigation is outlined and graph-theory navigational tools… more

Reviews of computing technology: A review of compound document architectures

Description: This review of computing technology will define, describe, and give examples of various approaches to document management through the use of compound document architectures. Experts agree that only 10% of business information exists in machine readable form, but much of what is stored is not in useful form. As a result, the average business document is copied over a dozen times during its life and duplicate copies are stored in numerous locations. The goal of compound document architectures is … more

A direct method for string to deterministic finite automaton conversion for fast text searching

Description: This paper describes a simple technique for generating a minimum state deterministic finite automation (DFA) directly from a restricted set of regular expressions. The resulting DFA is used for string searches that do not alter the target text and require only a single pass through the input. The technique is used for very fast, mixed or same case, single or multiple string searches. The technique is also capable of directly converting multiple strings with wild card character specifiers by con… more

Use of DBMS-10 for storage and retrieval of evaluated nuclear data files

Description: The use of a data base management system (DBMS) for storage of, and retrieval from, the many scientific data bases maintained by the National Nuclear Data Center is currently being investigated. It would appear that a commercially available DBMS package would save the Center considerable money and manpower when adding new data files to the library and in the long-term maintenance of current data files. Current DBMS technology and experience with an internal DBMS system suggests an inherent inef… more
