Design of a photovoltaic central power station

Description: Photovoltaic central power station designs have been developed for both high-efficiency flat-panel arrays and two-axis tracking concentrator arrays. Both designs are based on a site adjacent to the Saguaro Power Station of Arizona Public Service. The plants are 100 MW each, made of 5 MW subfields. The site specific designs allow detailed cost estimate for site preparation, installation, and engineering. These designs are summarized and cost estimates analyzed. Provided also are recommendations … more

SLIFER Decipher

Description: The SLIFER Decipher (SD) is a digital instrument that records a time-varying frequency signal in the range from 700 kHz to 1500 kHz with an amplitude greater than 200 mV. This signal is referenced to an input fiducial marker. The primary purpose of this instrument is to reduce data recorded on magnetic tape from the SLIFER system used in underground nuclear tests. The SD records 512 samples after the fiducial signal, with a sample interval of 50 ..mu..s (for a total recording time of 25.55 ms).… more

Short circuit detection in the winding and operation of superconducting magnets

Description: Three categories of shorts will be discussed: (1) shorts to the metallic bobbin or other structural elements, (2) shorts between turns caused by instrumentation wires that are deliberately connected to a turn at the end (e.g., voltage taps) and that short out to another turn but are not completely severed in the process, and (3) short circuits between turns caused by direct contact due to insulation failure by chips of metal bridging turns and by instrumentation wires that bridge turns but are … more

SEM technique for experimentally locating latch-up paths in integrated circuits

Description: A technique is presented for using the scanning electron microscope (SEM) in the electron-beam-induced current (EBIC) mode to delineate latch-up paths in CMOS ICs. In the EBIC mode, the current produced by the collection and separation of the electron-beam-generated electron-hole pairs in the space charge regions of the device is measured and used to form an image. Since the collection of these carriers is dependent on space charge region width (and thus junction potential), anything that alter… more

Description: The series switch is designed to operate at 120kV and pass 65A for 0.5 sec every 30 sec on the Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory CTR Neutral Beam Source Test Stand IIIB. The series switch consists of 400 individual SCR circuits connected in series and is turned on by a simple system of cascaded pulse transformers with multiple single turn secondaries each driving the individual SCR gates. It is turned off by an SCR impulse crowbar that momentarily shorts the power supply allowing the series switch t… more

Surface Underground Coincidences at the Soudan Mine

Description: A 37 m{sup 2} surface array which has been operating in coincidence with the Soudan 1 underground experiment is described. A comparison is made between measured and expected underground-surface coincident events. The surface array is used to tag'' the energy of the cosmic ray primary. Distributions of event rates and multiple muon rates as a function of energy are shown. Expected rates and plans for an enhanced array and for coincidences with Soudan 2 are also discussed. 1 ref., 6 figs.

Development and evaluation of systems for controlling parallel high di/dt thyratrons

Description: Increasing numbers of high power, high repetition rate applications dictate the use or thyratrons in multiple of hard parallel configurations to achieve the required rate of current rise, di/dt. This in turn demands the development of systems to control parallel thyratron commutation with nanosecond accuracy. Such systems must be capable of real-time, fully-automated control in multi-kilohertz applications while still remaining cost effective. This paper describes the evolution of such a contro… more

Design of the ZT-40 power crowbar system

Description: The design for a power crowbar system for ZT-40 to sustain a total current greater than 10/sup 7/ A with less than a 7% variation for 250 ..mu..s is discussed. The circuit performance without the power crowbar system is used to determine the power required. Several methods for supplying the power crowbar energy were investigated and simulated before choosing the final system. The advantages and disadvantages of the various options are also presented.

Dynamic positron emission tomography in man using small bismuth germanate crystals

Description: Primary considerations for the design of positron emission tomographs for medical studies in humans are the need for high imaging sensitivity, whole organ coverage, good spatial resolution, high maximum data rates, adequate spatial sampling with minimum mechanical motion, shielding against out of plane activity, pulse height discrimination against scattered photons, and timing discrimination against accidental coincidences. We discuss the choice of detectors, sampling motion, shielding, and ele… more

SSC physics signatures and trigger requirements

Description: Strategies are considered for triggering on new physics processes on the environment of the SSC, where interaction rates will be very high and most new physics processes quite rare. The quantities available for use in the trigger at various levels are related to the signatures of possible new physics. Two examples were investigated in some detail using the ISAJET Monte Carlo program: Higgs decays to W pairs and a missing energy trigger applied to gluino pair production. In both of the examples … more

General purpose computers in real time

Description: I see three main trends in the use of general purpose computers in real time. The first is more processing power. The second is the use of higher speed interconnects between computers (allowing more data to be delivered to the processors). The third is the use of larger programs running in the computers. Although there is still work that needs to be done, I believe that all indications are that the online need for general purpose computers should be available for the SCC and LHC machines. 2 fig… more

Effects of plasma-deposited silicon nitride passivation on the radiation hardness of CMOS integrated circuits

Description: The use of plasma-deposited silicon nitride as a final passivation over metal-gate CMOS integrated circuits degrades the radiation hardness of these devices. The hardness degradation is manifested by increased radiation-induced threshold voltage shifts caused principally by the charging of new interface states and, to a lesser extent, by the trapping of holes created upon exposure to ionizing radiation. The threshold voltage shifts are a strong function of the deposition temperature, and show v… more

Development of Passive Electronic Components for Instrumentation of Improved Geothermal Logging Tools and Components. Semiannual Progress Report. Report No. 1. [For Temperatures Up to 500/sup 0/C]

Description: Research progress is reported on the development of passive components, resistors, capacitors, metallization, and passivation, that will withstand well logging temperatures to 500/sup 0/C and have extremely low temperature coefficients. The lower the temperature coefficients, the more exacting the instrumentation designs can be without elaborate compensation techniques. The method of fabricating the thin film components is that of chemical vapor deposition (CVD) which is a major deviation from … more
