Corrosivity of Uranyl Fluoride to Certain Metals

Description: Abstract: "The results obtained from the tests conducted for the purpose of determining the corrosivity of a 30 percent-solution of uranyl fluoride to various metals indicate that stainless steels (type 302, 304, 321 and 316) have very good resistance; while monel, nickel and aluminum, respectively, exhibit diminishing resistance. Stainless steel, type 316, was the most resistant of the specimen tested."

Reclamation of Contaminated Kinney and Diffusion Pump Oils and Removal of Uranium Therefrom

Description: Abstract: Test distillations were made with Kinney and diffusion pump oils under vacuum in order to determine accurately the temperature range over which satisfactory distillate may be collected. Also recommendations are made as to the most advisable type of heating equipment necessary to produce the required heat and maintain the desired temperature. In addition, several important refinements in the distillation equipment were checked for operational characteristics and for their efficiency in… more

Recovery of Uranium From Oil Distillation Residue

Description: Abstract: The complete development of an effective process for recovery of the uranium in the residues from distillation of used Kinney and diffusion pump oils or similar oils is described. After considerable study and experimentation with several methods, a successful procedure has been developed. The recommended procedure embodies solution of the residues in trichlorethylene followed by extraction with nitric acid. Recovery of uranium is better than 99 percent effective and the method may be … more

Recovery of Uranium From Contaminated Precipitron Oil

Description: Abstract: The distillation and residue extraction recovery procedures developed for the recovery of uranium from Kinney and diffusion pump oil, were applied to contaminated precipitron oil. The effectiveness and advisability of using the method, in whole or in part, is discussed, and various recommendations for processing this particular type of oil are presented. Additional contaminating substances present in this type of oil added to the complexity of the problem but a satisfactory recovery p… more

The Density of Uranyl Sulfate Solutions and the Determination of Uranium Concentration by Density Measurements

Description: A study of the density of aqueous uranyl solutions is described which was had as its primary purpose the development of an analytical method for the determination of uranium in relatively dilute solutions of this salt. These solutions contain trace amounts of contaminating elements. The presence of small amounts of free sulfuric acid and moderate variations in the temperature at which density measurements are made can be compensated for by the use of equations provided for the calculation of ur… more

Analytical procedure for determination of tuballoy in solid salvage residues

Description: From abstract: Test results indicate that the hydrofluorination method for the analysis of tuballoy in solid salvage residues yields sufficient results with a high degree of accuracy; while a modification of the procedure gives good results in approximately half the time.

Dissolution of Uranium Tetrafluoride

Description: "Five new dissolution processes for uranium tetrafluoride are discussed-the NH4OH-H2O2 method, the H2SC4 - (NH4)2S2O8 method, the AlCl3 method, the NaAlcl method, and the Al (NO3)3.9E2O method. It is concluded that NaAlCl4 and Al(NO3)3.9H2O are preferable to the other agents, especially with regard to rate of dissolution and ease of manipulation."

Effect of Fluoride on the Gravimetric Determination of Zirconium in Zirconium Fluoride

Description: Abstract: "The results of this investigation that it is necessary to remove fluoride prior to precipitation zirconium with mandelic acid or phenyl arsonic acid. Fluoride, however, has little effect on the cupferron method of precipitation. The discovery that zirconium fluoride is soluble in a mixture of aqua regia and sulfuric acid made it possible to dissolve the material without the addition of fluoride from hydrofluoric acid."

Effect of Cu(NO₃)₂, TO₂(NO₃)₂ and Fe(NO₃)₃ on the Distribution Coefficients of Nitrate ion in the System Dibutyl Carbitol-Nitric Acid

Description: Introduction: "In this series of experiments a study of the distribution coefficients was made for the dibutyl carbitol-nitric acid system in the range of 1 to 5 normal nitric acid to establish more closely the break in distribution coefficients, found previously, when the acid concentration was increased from 2 to 4 normal. The study was then continued by adding various salting-out agents to the system. It was found that salting-out agents produce a great effect; in fact, they reverse the prev… more

Development of Equipment for the Purification of Mercury by Distillation

Description: Abstract: "An investigation of the mercury salvage program has resulted in the development of an improved high compacity type of distillation apparatus. The still, electrically heated and essentially automatic in its operation, will produce at a rate greater than 75 pounds per hour and develop a product 99.99% pure or better. This still will handle the lowest grade crude of amalgam that can pass through the feed lines and will continue to develop a pure prodcut for comparatively long periods of… more
