Some Effects of Exposure to Exhaust-Gas Streams on Emittance and Thermoelectric Power of Bare-Wire Platinum Rhodium - Platinum Thermocouples

Description: Thermocouples were exposed to exhaust gases from the combustion of propane, 72-octane gasoline, and JP-4 fuel. Exposure increased the emissivity of the thermocouple wire, which increased its radiation error. Two methods are presented for determining the emittance of the wires. The emissivity of a clean platinum rhodium-platinum thermocouple was approximately 0.2 in the temperature range investigated, while the emittance of an exposed thermocouple coated with exhaust residue was about 0.5. The e… more

A Self-Excited, Alternating-Current, Constant-Temperature Hot-Wire Anemometer

Description: Note presenting a hot-wire anemometer used to study turbojet-engine compressor rotating stall and surge. The system was capable of measuring flow over a frequency range of zero to 500 cycles per second. A description of the anemometer and a description of the dynamic characteristics, static characteristics, and operation and performance are provided.

Electrical Techniques for Compensation of Thermal Time Lag of Thermocouples and Resistance Thermometer Elements

Description: Note presenting a description of basic electrical networks that compensate for the thermal time lag of thermocouple and resistance thermometer elements used in combustion research and in the control of jet power plants. The measurement or the detection of rapid temperature changes by use of such elements can thereby be improved.
