The classical EMC effect from few-body systems to nuclear matter: Can binding effects explain it

Description: It is shown that if the effects of nucleon binding on deep inelastic scattering are considered within many-body realistic descriptions of nuclei which include nucleon-nucleon correlations, the EMC effect in light and medium weight nuclei and nuclear matter can be accounted for in the region 0.2 {le} x {le} 0.5, but a systematic discrepancy between theory and experiment remains to be explained for 0.5 {le} x {le} 0.9.

Simple photoelectron x-ray beam position monitor for synchrotron radiation

Description: A UHV compatible x-ray beam position monitor is described. The monitor operates by detecting the photoelectrons emitted by two parallel tungsten wires. A key feature of the monitor is the simplicity of its design and construction which allows it to fit on a 2 3/4 in. conflat flange. When combined with a simple log-ratio current amplifier the monitor gives an output linear in the beam position with a sensitivity better than 0.02 mm.

Study of irradiated bone: Part III. /sup 99m/Tc pyrophosphate autoradiographic changes. [X rays; rabbits]

Description: The macroautoradiographic and microautoradiographic localization of /sup 99m/Tc-pyrophosphate (/sup 99m/TcPPi) was studied in x-irradiated bone of rabbits up to one year post-irradiation. In cortical bone, /sup 99m/TcPPi was concentrated on bone surfaces near vasculature. Both forming and resorbing bone surfaces were comparably labeled at 2 hrs post-injection. Uptake on the surface of sites of haversian bone remodeling was observed to be at least part of the increased /sup 99m/TcPPi observed in… more

Cost effective solar hot water system for Econo-Travel Motor Hotel, Chesapeake, Virginia. Final report

Description: The final report of a cost effective solar hot water heating system installed on the Econo-Travel Motor Hotel at 4725 W. Military Highway, Chesapeake, Virginia, is presented. The description of the system along with the final breakdown performance data and payback time are given. The payback time for the installed system will be approximately four (4) years instead of the 6.65 years estimated for the proposal. The additional savings is due to the reduction in the peak demand charge since the el… more

A history of major Hanford facilities and processes involving radioactive material. [Contains glossary]

Description: The Hanford Environmental Dose Reconstruction (HEDR) Project was established in 1987 to estimate radiation doses that people could have received from nuclear operations at the Hanford Site since 1944. Hanford Site operations began in 1944 to produce plutonium for nuclear weapons. This effort included fabricating fuel elements, irradiating the fuel in nuclear reactors, and separating the resulting plutonium from uranium and fission byproducts. To build a foundation for the first step in estimati… more

Factors affecting the integrity of PWR pressure vessels during overcooling accidents

Description: The reactor pressure vessel in a pressurized water reactor is normally subjected to temperatures and pressures that preclude propagation of sharp, crack-like defects that might exist in the wall of the vessel. However, if certain postulated accidents, referred to as overcooling accidents, were to occur, the pressure vessel could be subjected to severe thermal shock while the pressure is substantial. As a result, vessels containing high concentrations of copper and nickel, which enhance radiatio… more

Hydrological evaluation of five sedimentary rocks for high-level waste disposal. [Anhydrock]

Description: Utilizing performance criteria that are based upon siting guidelines issued by DOE for postclosure as well as preclosure conditions, a preliminary hydrologic evaluation and ranking is being conducted to determine the suitability of five sedimentary rocks as potential host rocks for a high-level radioactive waste repository. Based upon both quantitative and qualitative considerations, the hydrological ranking of the rocks in order of their potential as a host rock for the disposal of radioactive… more

Controlled biaxial strain-rate test results from unirradiated 20% CW 316 stainless steel cladding at constant temperature

Description: Constant temperature controlled biaxial strain-rate (CBSR) tests were performed on unirradiated 20% CW 316 stainless steel reactor cladding. Tests were made at hoop strain-rates of 1.2 x 10/sup -5//s, 1.2 x 10/sup -4//s, 6 x 10/sup -4//s, and 1.2 x 10/sup -3//s. For each of these strain rates, tests were performed at 425/sup 0/C, 540/sup 0/C, and 650/sup 0/C. The data from these tests are examined and compared with previously reported tensile data. A simple relationship between tensile and CBSR… more

Thermal shield support degradation in pressurized water reactors

Description: Damage to the thermal shield support structures of three pressurized water reactors (PWRs) due to flow-induced vibrations was recently discovered during refueling. In two of the reactors, severe damage occurred to the thermal shield, and in one reactor the core support barrel (CSB) was damaged, necessitating extended outages for repairs. In all three reactors, several of the thermal shield supports were either loose, damaged, or missing. The three plants had been in operation for approximately … more

Lifetime measurements for bottom hadrons

Description: The review of lifetime measurements of bottom hadrons begins with a first measurement by JADE, followed by similar measurements by MAC and MKII groups. New MAC data are reviewed based on a total of 75,000 multihadron events taken at a c.m. energy of 29 GeV. According to Monte Carlo calculations, 18% of the lepton candidates stem from charm decay and roughly 30% were misidentified hadrons. DELCO studied electrons obtained from 42,000 multihadron events at 29 GeV. The electrons were identified by… more

High-performance capillary electrophoresis of histones

Description: A high performance capillary electrophoresis (HPCE) system has been developed for the fractionation of histones. This system involves electroinjection of the sample and electrophoresis in a 0.1M phosphate buffer at pH 2.5 in a 50 {mu}m {times} 35 cm coated capillary. Electrophoresis was accomplished in 9 minutes separating a whole histone preparation into its components in the following order of decreasing mobility; (MHP) H3, H1 (major variant), H1 (minor variant), (LHP) H3, (MHP) H2A (major va… more

Local entropy generation analysis

Description: Second law analysis techniques have been widely used to evaluate the sources of irreversibility in components and systems of components but the evaluation of local sources of irreversibility in thermal processes has received little attention. While analytical procedures for evaluating local entropy generation have been developed, applications have been limited to fluid flows with analytical solutions for the velocity and temperature fields. The analysis of local entropy generation can be used t… more

Numerical simulation of secondary electron orbits near an electron beam propagating in a low pressure gas

Description: A numerical simulation has been constructed to obtain a detailed, quantitative estimate of the electromagnetic fields generated in a recently-proposed collective accelerator scheme for electrons. The code treats the secondary electrons by particle simulation and the beam dynamics by a time-dependent envelope model. The simulation gives a fully relativistic description of secondary electrons moving in selfconsistent electromagnetic fields. The calculations are made using coordinates t, x, y, z f… more
