Synchrotron beam-loading stability with a higher rf harmonic

Description: This work is an attempt to extend Robinson's stability studies to include a higher rf harmonic. Using an equivalent circuit model, the stability of the O-mode'' coherent dipole oscillation of bunched beams is studied for synchrotrons or storage rings, with rf systems operated at the fundamental and a higher harmonic, i.e., a 2nd or 3rd harmonic. Analytical expressions of the stability criteria are derived from the linearized circuit equations. Numerical solutions of the fully nonlinear equation… more

Dynamics, Stability, and Control of Maglev Systems

Description: The dynamic response of maglev systems is important in several respects: Safety and ride quality, guideway design, and system costs. The dynamic response of vehicles is the key element in the determination of ride quality, and vehicle stability is one of the important elements relative to safety. To design a proper guideway that provides acceptable ride quality in the stable region, the vehicle dynamics must be understood. The trade-off between guideway smoothness and the levitation and control… more

Initial operation of the CW 8X H[sup [minus]] ion source discharge

Description: A pulsed 8[Chi] source was built and the H[sup [minus]] beam current, emittance, and power efficiency were measured. These results were promising, so a cooled, dc version designed for operation at arc power levels up to 30 kW was built. Testing of the CW 8[Chi] source discharge is underway. The design dc power loading on the cathode surface is 900 W/cm[sup 2], considerably higher than achieved in any pervious Penning surface-plasma source (SPS). Thus, the electrode surfaces are cooled with pres… more

Proceedings of the workshop on applications of synchrotron radiation to trace impurity analysis for advanced silicon processing

Description: Wafer surface trace impurity analysis is essential for development of competitive Si circuit technologies. Today's grazing incidence x-ray fluorescence techniques with rotating anodes fall short of requirements for the future. Hewlett Packard/Toshiba experiments indicate that with second generation synchrotron sources such as SSRL, the techniques can be extended sufficiently to meet important needs of the leading edge Si circuit industry through nearly all of the 1990's. This workshop was held … more
