Mechanical properties of 0. 2 g/cm/sup 3/ polystyrene bead foam

Description: In order to better interpret the results from a strain gage investigation of the effects of stress induced by polystyrene bead foam (PSBF) on electronic devices, the tensile and compressive properties of 0.2 g/cm/sup 3/ potting PSBF needed to be determined. These data are also required for mathematical models being employed to predict the force PSBF may exert on components. The properties were determined to be a function of temperature and residual pentane (blowing agent) content at -54/sup 0/,… more

Event matrix system. [To eliminate high-rate backgrounds]

Description: The number of background events in nuclear and particle physics experiments which use multiwire proportional chambers can be extremely high. Using a computer to resolve these events results in a high deadtime for the experiment. A fast matrix system for decreasing the number of background events is described in this report. 4 figures.

VORP, an improved detector system for remote measurements. [Voltage Output Radiation Probe for ionization chamber readout for underground nuclear explosion diagnostics]

Description: The Voltage Output Radiation Probe (VORP) is used as the detector to monitor radiological data on underground nuclear tests at the Department of Energy (DOE) Nevada Test Site. The VORP was designed to convert the current output of a Neher-White ionization chamber to a voltage output. There are several advantages in having a voltage output device rather than a low current probe in the field. The VORP makes it easier to protect against transients induced in the field wires. It also allows the use… more

Improved methods of fabricating multilayer printed wiring boards. Final report

Description: A reliable process for the fabrication of multilayer printed wiring boards has been further improved by implementing a solder-dip-and-level process in place of the conventional pattern-tin-lead-plate process. A commercial chronic acid etchant has proven to be superior to the previously used sulfuric acid etchback solution. An economical, disposable polyvinyl-fluoride-film release sheet has been adopted, and a nuclear static-electricity eliminator has proven effective in providing lint-free pane… more

Laser flow cytophotometric light scatter and fluorescence time-of-flight sizing of mammalian cells. [Use of pulse width or pulse rise time measurements]

Description: In laser flow cytophotometry, an increasingly popular technique of analytical cytology, quantitative measurements of interest include cell and nuclear diameters. Electronic circuitry for a new method of time-of-flight cell sizing was developed which measures the time that signal pulses from either fluorescence or light scatter sensors exceed a preset constant fraction of the peak signal amplitude (pulse width) or the time that it takes a signal to rise between constant fractions of the peak sig… more

Energy-dependent losses in pulsed-feedback preamplifiers

Description: Energy dependent counting losses occur in most pulsed-feedback preamplifiers due to the loss of those pulses which activate the recharge system. A pulsed-feedback system that overcomes this inefficiency is described. Pulsed-light feedback as used with germanium gamma-ray spectrometers is discussed as used at high energies and high rates where those losses become significant. Experimental results are presented.

TMX magnet control system

Description: A control system utilizing a microcomputer has been developed that controls the power supplies driving the Tandem Mirror Experiment (TMX) magnet set and monitors magnet coil operation. The magnet set consists of 18 magnet coils that are driven by 26 dc power supplies. There are two possible modes of operation with this system: a pulse mode where the coils are pulsed on for several seconds with a dc power consumption of 16 MW; and a continuous mode where the coils can run steady state at 10 perc… more

Triggering at Isabelle; the first 200 nanoseconds

Description: At full luminosity of ISABELLE and with an anticipated pp total cross section of 60 mb, there will be, on the average, one interaction every 70 ns. At the other end of the spectrum, it will probably take about 10 ms to store a complete event onto magnetic tape. In between these two extremes comes a triggering scheme which must select the one event out of 14,285,714 that is of interest to the experimenter. In a typical experiment, a certain small number of signals will come into an electronics t… more

Design of a single coil double resonance NMR probe for combined magic angle spinning double resonance experiments

Description: A design of the r.f. circuitry for a single coil double resonance NMR probe is presented. The design is useful for NMR double resonance experiments at two widely separated frequencies. The design is characterized by relatively high power efficiency, high isolation between the two frequencies used, and excellent signal-to-noise ratios for the detected NMR frequency. Using this design, most single frequency probes can be easily modified for double resonance experiments.
