Distribution of Aeromonas hydrophila in a South Carolina cooling reservoir. [Aeromonas hydrophila]

Description: Par Pond is a thermally enriched monomictic southeastern lake which receives heated effluent from a production nuclear reactor. Fish populations in the lake have lesions of epizooty from which Aeromonas spp. are readily isolated. Distribution and population densities of Aeromonas in the water column were measured along an oxygen and temperature gradient. Greater population densities of Aeromonas occurred below the oxygen chemocline when the lake was stratified. Survival of A. hydrophila under i… more

Discovery of a Thermophilic Nitrogen Fixing Bacterium

Description: The thermophilic bacterium designated NT-7 was shown to reduce acetylene to ethylene at 35 C. It was found that the organism does not reduce acetylene when it is grown in Burk's medium with 0.3 per cent (w/v) NH4 N0 3 . Reduction of acetylene at 55 C could not be demonstrated due to insolubility of acetylene in Burk's medium at this temperature. It was shown that the bacterium NT-7 can not grow in the absence of atmospheric nitrogen at 55 C when combined nitrogen is not supplied with the nutrie… more

Effect of Amino Acids on Growth and Cartenogenesis in Corynebacterium Species Strain 7E1C

Description: Studies were evaluated on the effects of known growth factors on the growth and carotenogenesis of Corynebacterium species strain 7ElC. The complex medium, Tryptic Soy Broth, was found to stimulate growth and production of more pigment in the light and in the dark than did a mineral salts-glucose medium. A complete amino acid mixture added to LSG enhanced carotenogenesis in the dark in Corynebacterium 7ElC, while B-vitamins retarded carotenogenesis. No absolute requirement for one or more amino … more

Cyclic electron transport in photosynthesis

Description: In intact spinach chloroplasts, aerobic rates of HCO/sub 3//sup -/ supported oxygen evolution in saturating light are several-fold higher than rates observed under near anaerobic conditions. The lower anaerobic rates are accelerated by antimycin A or by uncouplers. Antimycin A, however, does not uncouple under the conditions used but appears to be a selective inhibitor of cyclic electron flow. With its aid, the contribution of cyclic flow to photosynthetic energy transduction can be evaluated. … more

Thermoregulation and temperature relations of alligators and other large ectotherms inhabiting thermally stressed habitats. Progress report, 1 October 1974--30 September 1977

Description: Significant progress has been made in determining the mechanisms by which large ectotherms adjust to thermal stress in their natural environment. The effect of mouth gaping on head temperatures and the role of radiation, conduction and convection on body temperatures of alligators have been determined. The utility of energy budget modeling as a method for studying the thermoregulatory mechanisms of animals has been demonstrated. Steady state and time dependent models of body temperature have be… more

Automatic gas analysis system for continuous monitoring of oxygen and carbon dioxide exchange in terrestrial ecosystems. [Measurement of CO/sub 2/ production and O/sub 2/ consumption by small terrestrial vertebrates in natural habitat]

Description: An automatic, continuous flow, gas analysis system was designed to monitor metabolic rates of terrestrial vertebrates over relatively long periods of time, such as daily cycles, under field conditions in the absence of the investigator. The gas analysis system described in this report used an infrared absorption analyzer for carbon dioxide and a paramagnetic analyzer for oxygen. The simultaneous measurement of CO/sub 2/ production and O/sub 2/ consumption by an organism permitted the direct cal… more

The Effect of Light on Carotenoid Synthesis in Corynebacterium 7E1C

Description: The effects of light, light "mimicking" chemicals, and protein synthesis inhibitors on the photo-induced carotenogenesis of Corynebacterium 7EIC were studied. Changes in the dosage of fluorescent light applied to dark grown cells showed a dose related carotenogenic response. Maintaining the same dosage but varying the wavelength of monochromatic light revealed that light with a wavelength of 280 to 450nm was responsible for photo-induction. It further showed a peak of photo-induction between th… more

Interactions of Corbicula sp. with power plants. [Power plant condenser fouling by clams, use of waste heat for control of fouling by clams, and use of thermal effluents in clam aquaculture]

Description: There are three perspectives with which to view the interaction of Corbicula and power plants: as a fouling agent; as an important part of the natural ecosystem; and as a potential species for use in waste heat aquaculture. The first two of these interactions are essentially negative in character, since they involve avoidance of impacts either of Corbicula on power plant operation or of power plant operation on Corbicula. Condenser fouling by these claims has been controlled by mechanical means… more

Impact of thermal loading and other water quality parameters on the epizootiology of Epistylis and Aeromonas infections of centrarchids. Progress report, September 1, 1976--July 30, 1977

Description: During the past year, mounting evidence has been accumulated which indicates that the causative agent for red-sore disease among bass is the bacterium, Aeromonas hydrophila, and not the ciliate, Epistylis, as suggested in previous literature. Red-sore disease among bass in Par Pond continues to be highly seasonal with peak periods of infection occurring in spring and summer, with declining levels in fall and summer. The disease continues to be more prevalent among bass from thermally altered ar… more

Aquaculture Report:1976

Description: Growth of channel catfish (Ictalurus punctatus) and Tilapia zillii in the Reft River Geothermal Area (RRGT) geothermal waters can equal or surpass that in a commercial aquaculture facility. Fish and prawn mortality over the course of the intermediate term preliminary study did not appear to be related to any inherent geothermal water chemistry conditions. Temperature control was a problem but does not appear to be beyond design control. The absence of temperature-related mortality in channel ca… more
