Topical Reports on Louisiana Salt Domes

Description: Abstract: "The Institute for Environmental Studies at Louisiana State University conducted research into the potential use of Louisiana salt domes for disposal of nuclear waste material. Topical reports generated in the 1981 and 1982 related to Vacherie and Rayburn's domes are compiled and presented, which address palynological studies, tiltmeter monitoring, precise releveling, saline springs, and surface hydrology. The latter two are basically a compilation of references related o these topics… more

The Properties and Heat Treatment of Zirconium-Uranium Alloys

Description: From Abstract: "The heat treatment and mechanical properties of four zirconium alloys...were investigated. Tensile, hardness, Jominy end-quench, and metallographic data constitute the basis for much of the report. Other data reported include the results of high-temperature creep, tensile, hardness, cold rolling, thermal-cycling, and dynamic-modulus tests." A connection is made between the behavior of these four alloys and more alloys in the zirconium-uranium system.

Surface Geologic Reconnaissance of Vacherie Dome, Bienville and Webster Parishes, Louisiana

Description: Abstract: "A geologic reconnaissance map was prepared in the area of Vacherie Dome at a scale of 1:24,000. To do this, the available data were compiled, resistivity surveys were conducted, and reconnaissance field mapping took place. Then all the information was consolidated for the map preparation."

Degradation Products of Tributyl Phosphate

Description: Abstract: "A method for determination of dibutyl phosphate in solvent streams containing tributyl phosphate is outlined. The method is based on analysis for total uranium of total phosphate after removal of uranium and phosphate in excess of that present as uranyl dibutyl phosphate. Results on plant solvent samples are presented. Difficulties with precipitation of [...] dibutyl phosphate, when fresh solvents were employed, are discussed. Small amounts of nonphosphate uranium-complexing agents w… more

The technology of thorium

Description: A report describing the technological uses of thorium. The report details interest in thorium as a potential source of the fissionable isotope U233 as well as possessing other applications. Most of the information in this report was obtained from project literature and from unpublished data available to the authors.

The Effects of Chemical Impurities on the Quality of Rolled Uranium Rod

Description: Abstract: "The effects of nitrogen, slag, and hydrogen additions on the surface quality of rolled uranium rod were studied. The addition of 400 ppm of nitrogen resulted in severe striations. Slag inclusions elongated during rolling and produced short open seams in the etched surface. The effects of 9 to 10 ppm of hydrogen were obscured by defects in the original costings. These defects were caused by oxide films entrapped in the ingot."

An evaluation of data on zirconium-uranium alloys

Description: Report describing the literature relative to zirconium-uranium alloys. The available data related to zirconium-uranium alloys is analyzed in an attempt to understand the behavior and nature of the alloy. Other aspects of zirconium-uranium alloys are discussed in the report.

Characterization of Inclusion in Dingot Uranium

Description: Abstract: The nonmetallic inclusions in both as-reduced and fabricated dingot uranium have been studied for comparison with those in ingot uranium. Special attention was paid to the hydride for the purpose of determining the amount and distribution in the various types of uranium. The types and distribution of other inclusions were also studied. It was found that the dingot uranium was of a higher quality than ingot uranium and was comparable to as-reduced derby uranium on the basis of over-all… more

Electroplated Metals on Uranium for Aluminum Cladding

Description: Abstract: "Aluminum-clad nickel-plated uranium is corrosion resistant in boiling water. Samples with intentional defects in the aluminum-nickel clodding layers, after testing for more than 300 hr. showed no sign of rapid failure. The study of electroplated metals on uranium for aluminum cladding has defined the effects of several processing variables on the corrosion resistance. The quality of the uranium and the quality of the aluminum-nickel bond were important. Heat treatment and vacuum outg… more
