Light Hadron Physics at the B Factories

Description: We report measurements of hadronic final states produced in e{sup +}e{sup -} annihilations from the BABAR and Belle experiments. In particular, we present cross sections measured in several different processes, including two-photon physics, Initial-State Radiation, and exclusive hadron productions at center-of-mass energies near 10.58 GeV. Results are compared with theoretical predictions.

Project X and its connection to neutrino physics

Description: Project X is a new high intensity proton source that is being planned at Fermilab to usher in a new era of high intensity physics. The high intensity frontier can provide a wealth of new measurements--the most voracious consumer of protons is the long baseline neutrino program, but with the proton source upgrades being planned there are even more protons available than current neutrino targets can withstand. Those protons can provide a rich program on their own of muon physics and neutrino scat… more

Search for New Physics in the B0(s) mixing phase

Description: The Collider Detector at Fermilab (CDF) experiment performed the first measurement of the time-evolution of flavor-tagged B{sub s}{sup 0} {yields} J/{psi}{phi} decays, which probes mixing-induced CP-violation in the B{sub s}{sup 0} sector. Any sizable deviation from zero of the phase {beta}{sub s}J/{psi}{phi}, accessible through interference of the {bar b} {yields} {bar c}c{bar s} quark-level process accompanied or not by B{sub s}{sup 0}-{bar B}{sub s}{sup 0} mixing, would be unambiguous indica… more

Recent Searches for Exotic Physics at the BaBar/PEP-II B-factory

Description: I present three recent results from searches for exotic physics at the BABAR/PEP-II B-factory. These results span many of the samples produced at the B-factory, including B mesons, {tau} leptons, and {Upsilon}(3S) mesons. We have searched for CPT-violation in B{sup 0} mixing and find no significant deviation from the no-violation hypothesis. We have also searched for lepton-flavor-violating decays of the {tau} using {tau}{sup -} {yields} {omega}{ell}{sup -} and {tau}{sup -} {yields} {ell}{sup -… more

QCD Corrections in Transversely Polarized Scattering

Description: We discuss two recent calculations of higher-order QeD corrections to scattering of transversely polarized hadrons. A basic concept underlying much of the theoretical description of high-energy hadronic scattering is the factorization theorem, which states that large momentum-transfer reactions may be factorized into long-distance pieces that contain information on the structure of the nucleon in terms of its parton densities, and parts that are short-distance and describe the hard interactions… more

Top Quark Pair Production Cross Section and Forward-Backward Asymmetry at the Tevatron

Description: We present recent results on top quark pair production cross section and forward-backward asymmetry at the Tevatron. Three new cross section measurements from CDF and one new measurement from DO are presented that utilize the full dataset available. A new DO top cross section combination gives a ttbar production cross section of sigma ttbar = 7.83 + 0.46-0.45 (stat) + 0.64-0.53 (syst) +-0.48 (lumi). The new CDF cross section combination for ttbar production is found to be 7.0 +- 0.3 (stat) +- 0… more

GammeV: A gamma to milli-eV particle search at Fermilab

Description: GammeV is an experiment conducted at Fermilab that employs the light shining through a wall technique to search for axion-like particles and employs a particle in a jar technique to search for dilaton-like chameleon particles. We obtain limits on the coupling of photons to an axion-like particle that extend previous limits for both scalars and pseudoscalars in the milli-eV mass range. We are able to exclude the axion-like particle interpretation of the anomalous PVLAS 2006 result by more than 5… more

Long Baseline Neutrino Beams and Large Detectors

Description: It is amazing to acknowledge that in roughly 70 years from when the existence of the neutrino was postulated, we are now contemplating investigating the mysteries of this particle (or particles) requiring and utilizing detectors of 300 ktons , distances of 1,000-2,000 kilometers, beam intensities of megawatts and underground depth of 5,000 feet. This evolution has evolved slowly, from the experimental discovery of the neutrino in 1956, to the demonstration that there were two neutrinos in 1962 … more

Search for Heavy Top-like Quarks t-rime ---> Wq Using Lepton Plus Jets Events in 1.96-TeV p anti-p Collisions

Description: We present the results of a search for a new heavy top-like quark, tprime, decaying to a W boson and another quark using the CDF II Detector in Run II of the Tevatron ppbar collider. New top-like quarks are predicted in a number of models of new physics. Using a data sample corresponding to 2.8 fb-1 of integrated luminosity we fit the observed spectrum of total transverse energy and reconstructed quark mass to a combination of background plus signal. We see no evidence for tprime production, so… more

RHIC Polarized proton performance in run-8

Description: During Run-8, the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) provided collisions of spin-polarized proton beams at two interaction regions. Physics data were taken with vertical orientation of the beam polarization, which in the 'Yellow' RHIC ring was significantly lower than in previous years. We present recent developments and improvements as well as the luminosity and polarization performance achieved during Run-8, and we discuss possible causes of the not as high as previously achieved polariza… more

Calculation Of Change-Changing Cross Sections Of IONS Or Atoms Colliding With Fast IONS Using The Classical Trajectory Method

Description: Evaluation of ion-atom charge-changing cross sections is needed for many accelerator applications. A classical trajectory Monte Carlo (CTMC) simulation has been used to calculate ionization and charge exchange cross sections. For benchmarking purposes, an extensive study has been performed for the simple case of hydrogen and helium targets in collisions with various ions. Despite the fact that the simulation only accounts for classical mechanics, the calculations are comparable to experimental … more

Introduction to Electroweak Symmetry Breaking

Description: The Standard Model (SM) is the backbone of elementary particle physics-not only does it provide a consistent framework for studying the interactions of quark and leptons, but it also gives predictions which have been extensively tested experimentally. In these notes, I review the electroweak sector of the Standard Model, discuss the calculation of electroweak radiative corrections to observables, and summarize the status of SM Higgs boson searches. Despite the impressive experimental successes,… more

Charmless b-hadrons decays at CDF

Description: We present CDF results on the branching fractions and time-integrated direct CP asymmetries for Bd, Bs and Lb decay modes into pairs of charmless charged hadrons (pions, kaons and protons). The data-set for these measurements amounts to 1fb{sup -1} of p{bar p} collisions at a center of mass energy 1.96TeV. We report on the first observation of the Bs->Kpi, Lb-ppi and Lb->pK decay modes and on the measurement of their branching fractions and direct CP asymmetries.

Description: An experiment aimed at the synthesis of isotopes of element 120 has been performed using the {sup 244}Pu({sup 58}Fe,xn){sup 302-x} 120 reaction. No decay chains consistent with fusion-evaporation reaction products were observed during an irradiation with a beam dose of 7.1 x 10{sup 18} 330-MeV {sup 58}Fe projectiles. The sensitivity of the experiment corresponds to a cross section of 0.4 pb for the detection of one decay.

Proposal to search for mu- N -> e- N with a single event sensitivity below 10 -16

Description: We propose a new experiment, Mu2e, to search for charged lepton flavor violation with unprecedented sensitivity. We will measure the ratio of the coherent neutrinoless conversion in the field of a nucleus of a negatively charged muon into an electron to the muon capture process: R{sub {mu}e} = {mu}{sup -} + A(Z,N) {yields} e{sup -} + A(Z,N)/{mu}{sup -} + A(Z,N) {yields} {nu}{sub {mu}} + A(Z-1, N), with a sensitivity R{sub {mu}e} {le} 6 x 10{sup -17} at 90% CL. Selected Isotopes for Optimized Fuel Assembly Tags

Description: In support of our ongoing signatures project we present information on 3 isotopes selected for possible application in optimized tags that could be applied to fuel assemblies to provide an objective measure of burnup. 1. Important factors for an optimized tag are compatibility with the reactor environment (corrosion resistance), low radioactive activation, at least 2 stable isotopes, moderate neutron absorption cross-section, which gives significant changes in isotope ratios over typical fuel a… more

RHIC performance with 56 MHz RF and gold ion beams pre-cooled at lower energy

Description: Presently there is an R&D ERL under construction at Collider-Accelerator Department (CAD) at BNL with its commissioning scheduled for FY09-10 [1]. The use of this full energy 21 MeV ERL in RHIC tunnel was recently proposed for a Proof-of-Principle demonstration of Coherent Electron Cooling of gold ions at 40 GeV/nucleon [2]. The purpose of this Note is to summarize numerical studies aimed at understanding the potential improvement of RHIC luminosity by using this R&D ERL for pre-cooling… more

Effect of various errors on the Spin Tune and Stable Spin Axis

Description: Even though RHIC has two full Siberian snakes in each ring, there are various perturbations to the ideal case including orbit errors at the snakes, experiment solenoids, injection bumps, and interlaced horizontal-vertical bumps at the hydrogen jet polarimeter. These errors can cause depolarization by shifting the spin tune and tilting the stable spin direction away from vertical. Tilting of the stable spin axis can enhance horizontal depolarizing resonances. This paper presents preliminary resu… more

The Center for Multiscale Plasma Dynamics, Final Report

Description: The University of Michigan participated in the joint UCLA/Maryland fusion science center focused on plasma physics problems for which the traditional separation of the dynamics into microscale and macroscale processes breaks down. These processes involve large scale flows and magnetic fields tightly coupled to the small scale, kinetic dynamics of turbulence, particle acceleration and energy cascade. The interaction between these vastly disparate scales controls the evolution of the system. The … more

Diffractive and Exclusive Production at the Tevatron

Description: Exclusive Higgs production, in which the event consists of nothing but the leading protons and a Higgs boson, has been proposed as a channel in which to study the properties of the Higgs boson at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). Although we do not expect to observe exclusive Higgs-boson production at the Tevatron, we can observe similar processes which provide a calibration for theoretical predictions of exclusive Higgs production at the LHC. The CDF measurements of exclusive dijet and diphoton… more
