The Absorption of Neutrons in Doppler Broadened Resonances

Description: A method is developed for the calculation of the effect of Doppler broadening of the absorption of the neutrons by a resonance absorber. Numerical values are given for the correction factors required in the interpretation of transmission experiments and self-indication experiments and for the self-shielding factors for slabs, spheres, cylinders, and homogeneous mixtures. REACTOR ENGINEERING DIVISION QUARTERLY REPORT FOR PERIOD JULY 1, 1954 THROUGH SEPTEMBER 30, 1954

Description: Reactor Programs. The design of the Boiling Experimental Reactor is described. The Borax-1 reactor was intentionally destroyed by suddenly adding 4% excess reactivity. Design of the Borax-II reactor is described. It will be used for studies of transient behavior and steadystate operation as a steam producer. A preliminary design configuration has been established in EBR-II employing central, inner, and outer blankets. Fuel geometries including a smaller pin-type element are being investigated. … more

The Oak Ridge National Laboratory Research Reactor Safeguard Report

Description: The proposed ORNL Research Reactor is designed to serve as a general purpose research tool delivering a maximum thermal flux of 8x10^13 n/cm2-sec at the initial power level of five megawatts. Operation at power levels up to ten megawatts is proposed for such items as sufficient cooling capacity is available to handle the increased heat load. The reactor will use MTR-type fuel elements and beryllium reflector pieces in a 7 x 9 grid with moderation and cooling provided by forced circulation of de… more

Role of Ionizztion in Radiatin Annealing

Description: The role of ionization in the phenomenon of" radiation annealing" of graphite has been studied by using a I-MeV electron beam. Changes in the C-axis of a sample with a Hanford irradiation of 460 Mwd/ct were studied. Two thermal anneals of 4 hours each at 350{degree}C proved sufficient to complete the thermal annealing at this temperature. The samples were then irradiated for 7 {1I2} hrs at a temperature of 340 {degree}c. The samples received an irradiation of 47 microampere-hours, equivalent in… more

Performance of Air-Launched T-40 Rocket Motors with Two Types of Igniter

Description: Air-launched firings of eight T-40 rockets have been made. An average total impulse of 22,870 pound-seconds was observed for four of the rounds mounted in cone-cylinder vehicles. Maximum velocities of over 5000 feet per second were observed for two of the rounds with approximately 70-pound pay loads.

A Log and Period Amplifier for Reactor Control

Description: Abstract: "This report is a brief description of the most recent developments in logarithmic amplifiers and period amplifiers at the Knolls Atomic Power Laboratory. The theory of operation and circuit design are discussed. The operational characteristics of the amplifiers are greatly improved over those of earlier models by the use of feedback circuits and compensating circuits."
