Zirconium Research and Development : Progress Report

Description: From introduction: "This is the ninth monthly report, BMI-514, under Contract No. AT(30-1)-771 on "Zirconium Research and Development". The report covers the work period from September 15, 1950, to October 15, 1950. Work is continuing on the preparation of large-diameter zirconium crystal bars in the 16-inch-diameter de Boer unit. Crystal bars up to 1-5/16 inches in diameter and 8 feet long have been prepared in this unit."

Pitchblende Deposits at the Wood and Calhoun Mines, Central City Mining District, Gilpin County, Colorado

Description: From introduction: The purpose of this work was to determine the distribution and reserves of pitchblende in the veins. These particular mines were selected because the other mines that had produced pitchblende in the east were either inaccessible, or accessible under such adverse conditions as to make detailed mapping impracticable.

Electrodeposition of Aluminum and Zirconium on Uranium

Description: Technical report outlining a method for the electrodeposition of adherent deposits of both aluminum and zirconium on uranium. Report finds that current efficiencies are good for aluminum deposition but low for the zirconium baths. [From Abstract]

P-10 research program in biology

Description: Early this year recommendations for biological research with tritium were outlined by M. E. Getzendaner in document EW-17059. Since then work on many of the preliminary experiments suggested in that document has been and further thought has been given to design a research program to secure the information needed for evaluation of the tritium hazards. It seems desirable at this time to reformulate the projected research more extensively. This document will indicate only the scope of desirable in… more

The Preparation and Properties of Mammalian Ribonucleic Acids

Description: "A method for the preparation of mammalian ribonucleic acids employing high concentrations of guanidine hydrochloride in the fractionation procedure is reported in this paper. Aside from the facility of preparation the method has the advantage of avoiding conditions of acidity and alkalinity which might degrade tissue ribonucleic acids and, by virtue of the protein denaturant action of guanidine salts, of minimizing the possibility for enzymatic degradation" (p. 3).

Nuclear Quadrupole Moments and Nuclear Shell Structure

Description: Describes a simple model, based on nuclear shell considerations, which leads to the proper behavior of known nuclear quadrupole moments, although predictions of the magnitudes of some quadrupole moments are seriously in error.

Hyperfine Structure and Exchange Narrowing of Paramagnetic Resonance

Description: Discussion of electronic paramagnetic resonance for the free radical a, a-diphenyl β-picryl hydrazyl as observed by its effect on the transmission of microwaves through a TE {sub 01} cavity with a small amount of the free radical placed approximately on the axis of the cavity; the half-width of this resonance at half maximum absorption was 1.45 oersteds.

ZIRCONIUM RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT. Progress Report No. 9 for September 15, 1950 to October 15, 1950

Description: A zirconium crystal bar, weighing 29 pounds and 1 5/16 inches in diameter by 8 feet in over-all length, was prepared, using pear-shaped zirconium couples to join the filament to the electrodes. This crystal bar was the largest produced to date in the 16-in.-diam. de Boer unit. The design of the couplings was modified to incorporate improvements indicated by the initial run, and another run is in progress. Binary alloys of Zr and Ni, Cr, and Si, as well as a zirconium alloy containing Fe, Al, an… more
