Development of vertical dispersion coefficients for deep-valley terrain. [Aerosol particle transport model]

Description: Results are reported from studies conducted to determine reliable dispersion coefficients for use with the Gaussian plume model, that will represent a broader range of topographic conditions than was intended for the standard Pasquill-Gifford values. Total-vertical-dispersion coefficients for deep-valley terrain were developed from direct measurements of vertical dispersion made by the Norwegian Defense Research Establishment (NDRE) between 1965 and 1968, in three deep valleys, and one fjord lo… more

Trace elements in the terrestrial environment of a coal-fired powerhouse

Description: A coal-fired powerhouse at the Savannah River Plant, Aiken, South Carolina operated for more than 20 years without electrostatic precipitators and consumed about 360,000,000 kilograms of coal per year. Twenty-nine trace elements were measured in fly ash, and in samples of soil, vegetation, and ground water collected along a 29-km traverse centered on the powerhouse. There were statistically significant effects of the stack releases upon the concentration of Ba, Be, Cu, Hg, Mn, Se, and Sr in soi… more

Workshop report on quantifying environmental damage from energy activities

Description: Data and methods for quantifying environmental damage from energy activities were evaluated. Specifically, discussions were designed to identify the types and amounts of pollutants emitted by energy technologies that may affect the environment adversely, methods of estimating spatial and temporal changes in air and water quality resulting from these emissions, spatial and temporal distributions of ecosystems at risk, dose-response functions for pollutants and ecosystems at risk, and environment… more

Design and development of an automotive organic Rankine-cycle powerplant with a reciprocating expander. Final report. Volume II. Detailed discussion

Description: Work performed for the design and development of an organic Rankine-cycle engine for automobile propulsion is reported. An automotive power plant using an organic Rankine-cycle system with a reciprocating expander has been designed, built, and tested on an engine dynamometer in a preprototype configuration. The system is designed to provide performance approximately equivalent to that of a 351-CID internal combustion engine in the reference car, a 1972 Ford Galaxie 500. A description of the pre… more

Baseline studies in the desert ecosystem at East Mesa Geothermal Test Site, Imperial Valley, California

Description: Baseline data reported herein for soil, vegetation, and small mammal components of the East Mesa desert ecosystem represent a collection period from October 1975 to September 1977. Inasmuch as changes in salt balance from geothermal brine sources are of potential impact upon the ecosystem, considerable analytical effort was given to the determination of element constituents in soil, plant, and animal samples. A preliminary synthesis of data was done to investigate the heterogeneity of element c… more

Current deposition of kepone residuals in the Hopewell, Virginia area

Description: The exact amount of kepone released into the environment since production begin in Hopewell, Virginia, in 1966 is not known. It has been estimated, however, that roughly one hundred thousand pounds of the chemical were released during the period 1966 to 1975 from the Allied Chemical Corporation semi-works plant and the Life Sciences Products Company. This total resulted from the continuous release of kepone-saturated wastewaters, particulate emissions, and bulk disposal of waste batches of the … more

Thermal shock tolerances of six fishes and one invertebrate from the Pacific Northwest

Description: The purpose of this study was to ascertain the temperatures at which selected estuarine fishes from the Pacific Northwest and one of their potential food organisms would be incapacitated and killed after entering the thermal plume of an industrial cooling system. This information aids in impact evaluation of thermal discharges, especially where they act as barriers or entrapments. Data are presented from laboratory studies of equilibrium loss and thermal death as endpoints for different rates o… more

Environmental status of the Lake Michigan region. Volume 6. Zoobenthos of Lake Michigan

Description: This report summarizes Lake Michigan zoobenthic studies up to 1974, including reports of power-plant surveys. It describes ecologies of macroinvertebrate species and some microfauna, partly through use of data from other Great Lakes. The following are discussed: methodology of field surveys; zoobenthic indicators of pollution; zoobenthic effects on sediment-water exchanges; and numbers, biomass, and production of total macroinvertebrates. Prominent features of Lake Michigan zoobenthos include p… more
