Identification of Non-Pertechnetate Species in Hanford Tank Waste, Their Synthesis, Characterization, and Fundamental Chemistry

Description: Technetium, as pertechnetate (TcO4 -), is a mobile species in the environment. This characteristic, along with its long half-life, (99Tc, t1/2 = 213,000 a) makes technetium a major contributor to the long-term hazard associated with low level waste (LLW) disposal. Technetium partitioning from the nuclear waste at DOE sites will be required so that the LLW forms meet DOE performance assessment criteria. Technetium separations assume that technetium exists as TcO4 - in the waste. However, years o… more

Integration and conventional systems at STAR

Description: At the beginning of the design and construction of the STAR Detector, the collaboration assigned a team of physicists and engineers the responsibility of coordinating the construction of the detector. This group managed the general space assignments for each sub-system and coordinated the assembly and planning for the detector. Furthermore, as this group was the only STAR group with the responsibility of looking at the system as a whole, the collaboration assigned it several tasks that spanned … more

Development of the Ultra-Clean Dry Cleanup Process for Coal-Based Syngases

Description: The Siemens Westinghouse Power Corporation (SWPC) has proposed a novel scheme for polishing sulfur species, halides, and particulate from syngas to meet stringent cleaning requirements, the ''Ultra-Clean syngas polishing process.'' The overall development objective for this syngas polishing process is to economically achieve the most stringent cleanup requirements for sulfur species, halide species and particulate expected for chemical and fuel synthesis applications (total sulfur species < … more

Enhanced heat transfer using wire-coil inserts for high-heat-load applications.

Description: Enhanced heat-transfer techniques, used to significantly reduce temperatures and thermally induced stresses on beam-strike surfaces, are routinely used at the APS in all critical high-heat-load components. A new heat-transfer enhancement technique being evaluated at the APS involving the use of wire-coil inserts proves to be superior to previously employed techniques. Wire coils, similar in appearance to a common spring, are fabricated from solid wire to precise tolerances to mechanically fit i… more

Corrosion of Chromium-Rich Oxide Refractories in Molten Waste Glasses

Description: The DOE is faced with a wide variety of waste treatment problems throughout the complex. The diversity in physical, chemical, and radiological characteristics of these waste streams will necessitate an array of treatment technologies since, at present, there exists no single solution. Thermal treatment technologies have an important, but by no means singular, role to play in addressing this problem since they generally offer the potential for significant volume reductions, leach resistant waste… more

An investigation of the resistance rise and power fade in high-power Li-ion cells.

Description: Two different cell chemistries, Gen 1 and Gen 2, were subjected to accelerated aging experiments. In Gen 1 calendar-life experiments, useful cell life was strongly affected by temperature and time. Higher temperatures accelerated the degradation of cell performance. The rates of resistance increase and power fade followed simple laws based on a power of time and Arrhenius kinetics. The data have been modeled using these two concepts, and the calculated data agree well with the experimental valu… more

RAD/COMM ''Cricket'' Test Report

Description: A series of tests were performed at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) to evaluate and characterize the radiological response of a ''Cricket'' radiation detection system. The ''Cricket'' is manufactured by RAD/COMM Systems Corp., which is located in Ontario, Canada. The system is designed to detect radioactive material that may be contained in scrap metal. The Cricket's detection unit is mounted to the base of a grappler and monitors material, while the grappler's tines hold the material. It … more

A Nuclear Microbattery for MEMS Devices

Description: This project was designed to demonstrate the feasibility of producing on-board power for MEMS devices using radioisotopes. MEMS is a fast growing field, with hopes for producing a wide variety of revolutionary applications, including ''labs on a chip,'' micromachined scanning tunneling microscopes, microscopic detectors for biological agents, microsystems for DNA identification, etc. Currently, these applications are limited by the lack of an on-board power source. Research is ongoing to study … more

Geotechnical Analysis Report for July 2001 - June 2002

Description: This Geotechnical Analysis Report (GAR) presents and interprets the geotechnical data from the underground excavations at the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP). The data, which are obtained as part of a regular monitoring program, are used to characterize conditions, to compare actual performance to the design assumptions, and to evaluate and forecast the performance of the underground excavations. GARs have been available to the public since 1983. During the Site and Preliminary Design Valida… more

Experience and Operational Improvements, Mixer Pump Performance

Description: Millions of gallons of radioactive waste are stored in large underground tanks at DOE sites. The waste is made up of settled solids, in sludge form, at the bottom of the tank and a layer of supernatant liquid on top of it. It is necessary to mix the solids in the sludge layer with the supernatant liquid to facilitate their removal from the storage tanks for remediation. Our goal is to improve the mobilization of the settled solids by optimizing mixing with the supernatant liquid and preserving … more

Effect of Design Changes On Remote Handled Trench Waste Form Release Calculations

Description: A set of reactive chemical transport calculations was conducted with the Subsurface Transport Over Reactive Multi-phases (STORM) code to evaluate the long-term performance of a representative low-activity waste glass in a shallow subsurface disposal system located on the Hanford Site. One-dimensional simulations were conducted out to times of 20,000 yr. The simulations predict a lower release rate for the new trench design (0.605 ppm/yr) than for the old trench design (0.726 ppm/yr). Because th… more

Synthesizing a four-dimensional beam particle distribution frommultiple two-dimensional views

Description: The transverse dynamics of a nearly-monoenergetic particle beam are described by the evolution of the 4D distribution f(x,y,x',y'), where x and y are the transverse spatial coordinates and x' {triple_bond} p{sub x}/p{sub z} and y' {triple_bond} p{sub y}/p{sub z} are the corresponding momentum components divided by the longitudinal momentum component. In present-day experimental practice, such beams are often diagnosed by passing them through an axially-separated pair of slits parallel to the y … more

Separation Characteristics of Heavy Metal Compounds by Hot Gas Cleaning System

Description: The purpose of this research is the basic study for the development of separation technology of heavy metal compounds from hot flue gas. While the hot flue gas containing heavy metals from a melting furnace of industrial waste passes through the high temperature dust collector which can be varied the operating temperature. The heavy metals can be separated due to different boiling point of each heavy metal. On the basis of this concept, the concentration of heavy metals in the flue gas were sam… more

Design of Wrapper Integration Within the DataFoundry Bioinformatics Application

Description: The DataFoundry bioinformatics application was designed to enable scientists to directly interact with large datasets, gathered from multiple remote data sources, through a graphical, interactive interface. Gathering information from multiple data sources, integrating that data, and providing an interface to the accumulated data is non-trivial. Advanced techniques are required to develop a solution that adequately completes this task. One possible solution to this problem involves the use of sp… more
