Exploring novel silicon-containing polymers---From preceramic polymers to conducting polymers with nonlinear optical properties

Description: Several new types of silicon-containing preceramic polymers, i.e., poly(diorganosilacetylene) and poly(diorganosilvinylene) have been synthesized with molecular weights from 10,000 to 120,000. These polymers could be thermally converted to SiC with a moderate to high char yields. Ready solubility and good processability made these types of polymers attractive in their applications to ceramics. The thermal polymerization of diethynyldiphenyl-silane, which was reported in 1968 to afford poly(diph… more

Low-cost solar array project. Task I. Silicon material. Investigation of the hydrogenation of SiCl/sub 4/

Description: Reaction kinetic measurements on the hydrochlorination of SiCl/sub 4/ and m.g. silicon metal were last reported as a function of reaction temperature, reactor pressure, H/sub 2//SiCl/sub 4/ ratio and silicon metal particle size distribution, 3 SiCl/sub 4/ + 2 H/sub 2/ + Si reversible 4 SiHCl/sub 3/. The effect of impurities in the m.g. silicon metal on the rate of this reaction has been investigated in this quarter. The m.g. silicon was replaced with high purity, electronic grade silicon metal … more

[Letter from Jack Davis and Bill McCarter to Melba Davis Whatley, October 7, 1992]

Description: Photocopy of a letter from Jack Davis and Bill McCarter, co-directors of North Texas Institute for Educators on the Visual Arts, to Melba Davis Whatley. The letter is in regards to a discussion over advocacy programs and wanting to discuss these ideas with school board members / political leaders to have them look in depth at the discipline-based art education and what contributions it makes to the education of the students. Davis and McCarter mention the Texas Association of School Boards, TAS… more

Design studies of a laser fusion power plant

Description: The conceptual design of a laser fusion power plant has been undertaken to exploit recent developments in target design. Advanced high-gain targets which have been developed make it possible to significantly relax the laser and optical system requirements. The power plant design features a reactor concept which utilizes a thick falling region of liquid lithium to protect the first-wall from the neutrons, x-rays, and charged particles that are produced in the thermonuclear microexplosion. The li… more

MTX (Microwave Tokamak Experiment) facility and machine grounding plan

Description: A key issue in the design of fusion research experiments and their related facilities is the control of ground currents. Because of the large magnetic field, high voltages and high currents present in most of these installations, it is essential to avoid ground loops, and to control ground currents during both normal operations and fault conditions. This paper describes the grounding policy that was developed for MTX. The vault area was divided into zones, and each of the four walls was treated… more

A miniature inexpensive, oxygen sensing element

Description: An exhaustive study was conducted to determine the feasibility of Nernst-type oxygen sensors based on ceramics containing Bi{sub 2}O{sub 3}. The basic sensor design consisted of a ceramic sensing module sealed into a metal tube. The module accommodated an internal heater and thermocouple. Thermal-expansion-matched metals, adhesives, and seals were researched and developed, consistent with sequential firings during sensor assembly. Significant effort was devoted to heater design/testing and to m… more

Magnet power system for the Microwave Tokamak Experiment (MTX)

Description: The system configuration, layout, and general philosophy for the MTX magnet power system is described. The vast majority of the magnet power equipment was quite successfully used on the ALCATOR-C experiment at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. The AC power for the magnet system at MIT was obtained from a 225MVA alternator. The power for the system at LLNL is obtained directly from the local utility's 230 kV line. This installation, therefore, necessitates the addition of a great deal o… more

SPE water electrolysis technology development for large scale hydrogen production. Progress report No. 4, June 15, 1976--September 30, 1976

Description: Porous carbon fiber paper was selected as the cathode membrane and electrode assembly support based on over 1200 hr operational evaluation. Three potential anode supports are under test. All three appear technically satisfactory after 500 to 1200 hr operational evaluation on each. Optimization of molds and molding techniques for a foil backed ribbed carbon collector of bipolar design, including ribbed flow fields, manifolds, ports and sealing surfaces, is in process. Over 2800 hr demonstrated a… more

Analysis of three-phase power-supply systems using computer-aided design programs

Description: A major concern of every designer of large, three-phase power-supply systems is the protection of system components from overvoltage transients. At present, three computer-aided circuit design programs are available in the Magnetic Fusion Energy (MFE) National Computer Center that can be used to analyze three-phase power systems: MINI SCEPTRE, SPICE I, and SPICE II. These programs have been used at Lawrence Livermore Laboratory (LLL) to analyze the operation of a 200-kV dc, 20-A acceleration po… more

Comparison of the performance of a helicopter-type ram-jet engine under various centrifugal loadings

Description: Report presenting an investigation of an 18-foot-radius helicopter rotor powered by tip-mounted ramjet engines in the helicopter test tower. The engine performance is compared with the performance determined in a previous investigation of a 9-foot-radius rotor with the same engines at similar speeds but with twice the centrifugal forces. Results regarding the propulsive characteristics, minimum specific fuel consumption and corresponding propulsive thrust, and operational characteristics are pr… more
