An Application of Spencer's Method to the Stieltjes and Hamburger Moment Problems

Description: Given the moments of a function it is often desirable to obtain a numerical approximation of the function. A method for estimating the solutions of the Stieltjes and Hamburger moment problems is developed. Calculations indicate that the method is both feasible and accurate. (auth)

Some Microwave Studies of Gaseous Plasmas

Description: A Lecture Delivered at Sandia Corp., Albuquerque, N. Mex.. April 8, 1959. The type and nature of plasmas considered are defined, and it is shown that significant results are quite general and can be applied to large classes of plasmas. The physical phenomena are emphasized at the expense of the mathematics. (W.D.M.)

GENERALIZED FUNCTIONS OF GREEN FOR SYSTEMS OF ORDINARY DIFFERENTIAL EQUATIONS

Description: The adjoint operator of a matrix operator and adjoint boundary conditions for adjoint matrix operators are defined. It is shown that a matrix operator can be associated in various ways with a scalar differential operator and if two adjoint matrix operators are associated with scalar differential operators then the scalar operators are adjoint. Generalized Green's functions are obtained and their use for solving boundary-value problems is discussed. Properties which characterize a generalized fu… more

ELECTRON-POPULATION ANALYSIS AND THE DIPOLE MOMENT OF THE LiH$sup 1$$Sigma$$sup +$ EXCITED STATE

Description: Detailed consideration is given to some properties of the first excited electronic state. Following the analysis proposed by Mulliken, SCF LCAO-MO coefficients are used to obtain qualitative information about the electron distribution. Comparison is made with earlier work with respect to the description of the excited state in terms of the interacting configurations. In addition to the excited-state dipole moment, the effective electric moment between the ground and excited states is also calcu… more

Thermodynamics of Unsteady Flow Processes Involving Transfer of Heat for Vented Containment Systems

Description: The first law of thermodynamics for changes of state and quantity of the working substance in the case of unsteady flow is presented. Included are mass balance, forms of energy utilized, and definitions of stagnation enthalpy and stored energy. From the equations for unsteady flow the familiar equations for steady flow are deduced. A special case of the first law of thermodynamics for changes of state and quantity is applied in the theoreticaf derivation on emptying of a vented containment stru… more

SPACE-ENERGY CELL HOMOGENIZATION

Description: Fine-structure nuclear analysis program S was extended to provide properly averaged nuclear data for gross-structure analysis work. The input extension consists of the gross-structure space-energy lattice. Cell honiogenization is performed by dircct space-energy integration of each of the reaction-rate terms in the transport equation, with preservation of the detailed balance of leakage, collision, scatter-transfer, fission production, and fixed- source production. On a flexible fluxor-adjoint … more

Technology of Non-Production Reactor Fuels Reprocessing Budget Activity 2790. Quarterly Report

Description: Sawing studies were made using a dry function blade for cutting Zircaloy taking. An off-gas filtration system including a rotoclone and a filter assembly was installed to permit studying of the particulate material generated during the friction cutting operations. Studies of mechanical techniques for safety processing the Na or NaK alloy reservoirs present in some non-production fuels have continued. Stainless steel-clad swaged U0/sub 2/ rods and stainless steel- clad U- 10 wt.% Mo alloy rods w… more

RECYCLE OF UO$sub 2$F$sub 2$ IN THE FLUOROX PROCESS: REACTION OF UO$sub 2$F$sub 2$ WITH HYDROGEN

Description: The reaction of U0/sub 2/F/sub 2/ with hydrogen at 700 to 850 deg C was briefly investigated since it could constitute a major step in the recycle of U0/ sub 2/F/sub 2/ in the Fluorox process. The reaction in this temperature range proceeds according to the equation U0/sub 2/F/sub 2/ + H/sub 2/ yields U0/sub 2/ + 2 HF. Rates of the chemical reaction were not obtsined, since, with the thermogravimetric technique used, the rate-controlling process was bed diffusion. However, there is no doubt tha… more

ROUGHENING OF HEAT TRANSFER SURFACES AS A METHOD OF INCREASING THE HEAT FLUX AT BURNOUT. Progress Report No. 1

Description: The heat flux at burnout for rough surfaces that are cooled by forced flow of water in annuli was shown experimentally to be at least 50 to 100% greater than for smooth surfaces at the same coolant velocity, temperature, and pressure. By roughening the heat transfer surface of a fuel assembly and by increasing the size of the coolant passages, a net gain of as much as 80% in heat flux at burnout may be realized without increasing the power required to pump the coolant through the assembly. The … more

Specifications for Critical Mass Control Redox Plant - E-metal

Description: The specifications given in this document cover the processing of E-Metal. E-Metal is defined as natural uranium which has been enriched with U-235 to a concentration of 0.95 percent. The higher U-235 content makes the E-Metal more reactive than either natural or irradiated natural uranium. This difference in reactivity places a definite limit on the amount of massive metal that can be charged to the present Redox dissolvers. Once the slugs have been dissolved, the processing of E-Metal is esse… more

Self-Diffusion in Gamma Uranium

Description: The self-diffusion coefficient or uranium was measured at four temperatures in the gamma phase. The data are fitted by an Arrhenius-tyoe equation D = 2.33 x well with previously reported results. The value of D/sub o/ is lower than that predicted by Zener's theory, and the activation energy is much less than the value expected from various empirical codelations. (auth)

RECRYSTALLIZATION OF DEFORMED ALPHA-URANIUM SINGLE CRYSTALS. Final Report- -Metallurgy Division Program 4.1.19. Work Completed-January 1, 1956

Description: The orientation relationships between deformed alpha-uranium single crystals and recrystallized grains grown in them by annealing can be expressed as 27.5 deg rotations about axes located 70.0 deg from the STA100!, 63.5 deg from the STA010! and 34.0 deg from the STA001! of the deformed orientation. The rotations are clockwise about two of the axes and counterclockwise about the other two. In deriving these relationships it was necessary to consider the recrystallized grains as originating from … more
