Seismic risk analysis for General Electric Plutonium Facility, Pleasanton, California. Final report, part II

Description: This report is the second of a two part study addressing the seismic risk or hazard of the special nuclear materials (SNM) facility of the General Electric Vallecitos Nuclear Center at Pleasanton, California. The Part I companion to this report, dated July 31, 1978, presented the seismic hazard at the site that resulted from exposure to earthquakes on the Calaveras, Hayward, San Andreas and, additionally, from smaller unassociated earthquakes that could not be attributed to these specific fault… more

Seismic review of the R. E. Ginna Nuclear Power Plant as part of the Systematic Evaluation Program for the Nuclear Regulatory Commission

Description: This paper is a progress report on work at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) to perform a limited seismic reassessment of the Robert E. Ginna Nuclear Power Plant. The reassessment is being done for the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) as part of the Systematic Evaluation Program. The reassessment focuses generally on the reactor coolant pressure boundary and on those systems and components necessary to shut down the reactor safely and to maintain it in a safe shutdown conditi… more

Annual Hanford Seismic Report for Fiscal Year 2007

Description: This annual report documents the locations, magnitudes, and geologic interpretations of earthquakes recorded for the Hanford monitoring region of south-central Washington in fiscal year 2007 (October 2006 through September 2007). The report provides summaries of seismic events recorded during the first three quarters of fiscal year 2007 and contains a more comprehensive discussion of seismic events for the fourth quarter of the fiscal year.

300-Area accident analysis for Emergency Planning Zones

Description: The Department of Energy has requested SRL assistance in developing offsite Emergency Planning Zones (EPZs) for the Savannah River Plant, based on projected dose consequences of atmospheric releases of radioactivity from potential credible accidents in the SRP operating areas. This memorandum presents the assessment of the offsite doses via the plume exposure pathway from the 300-Area potential accidents. 8 refs., 3 tabs.

Annual Hanford Seismic Report for Fiscal Year 2010

Description: The Hanford Seismic Assessment Program (HSAP) provides an uninterrupted collection of high-quality raw and processed seismic data from the Hanford Seismic Network for the U.S. Department of Energy and its contractors. The HSAP is responsible for locating and identifying sources of seismic activity and monitoring changes in the historical pattern of seismic activity at the Hanford Site. The data are compiled, archived, and published for use by the Hanford Site for waste management, natural pheno… more

Coolant water transient in K Reactor following line rupture

Description: This investigation is the second study of short period flow decay in the Hanford reactors. The first study was made on the D-Reactor. As in the analysis for D-Reactor quantitative analyses were made for ruptures that might result from sabotage. A visual inspection of the entire process water piping system was also made to check for any glaring deficiencies with respect to earthquake resistance. A brief discussion of the earthquake resistance of the system is also included in this report.

Advanced Waveform Simulation for Seismic Monitoring Events

Description: Abstract We conduct a detailed test of a recently developed technique, CAPloc, in recovering source parameters from a few stations against results from a large broadband network in Southern California. The method uses a library of 1D Green’s functions which are broken into segments and matched to waveform observations with adjustable timing shifts. These shifts can be established by calibration against a distribution of well-located earthquakes and assembled in tomographic images for predicting… more

The Response of Long-Span Bridges to Low Frequency, Near-Fault Earthquake Ground Motions

Description: Historical seismic hazard characterizations did not include earthquake ground motion waveforms at frequencies below approximately 0.2 Hz (5 seconds period). This resulted from limitations in early strong motion instrumentation and signal processing techniques, a lack of measurements in the near-field of major earthquakes and therefore no observational awareness, and a delayed understanding in the engineering community of the potential significance of these types of motions. In recent years, the… more

LLNL Identification Program: Regional Body-Wave Correction Surfaces and Surface-Wave Tomography Models to Improve Discrimination

Description: LLNL identification research is focused on the problem of correctly discriminating small-magnitude explosions from a background of earthquakes, mining tremors, and other events. The goal is to reduce the variance within the population of each type of event, while increasing the separation between the explosions and the other event types. We address this problem for both broad categories of seismic waves: body waves and surface waves. First, we map out the effects of propagation and source size … more

Phenomenology Research Using Past Nevada Test Site Explosion and Earthquake Data

Description: We use regional waveform data from the Nevada Test Site (NTS) to investigate phenomenological relationships between recorded amplitude and explosion yield as well as test regional depth estimation procedures. Our goal is to better understand the performance of seismic observables in other regions of monitoring interest, especially at small magnitudes (m{sub b}<<4.5). Some of the topics we are studying include: stable yield estimation, depth estimation, and M{sub g}:m{sub b} performance. W… more

CHARACTERIZING EXTREME GROUND MOTIONS AT YUCCA MTN

Description: Characterization of the epistemic uncertainty and aleatory variability of ground motion, as part of the Yucca Mountain nuclear waste repository PSHA (Stepp et al., 2001), results in ground motion values that increase without bound as lower and lower annual probabilities of exceedance are considered. For probabilities of exceedance less than about 10{sup -6} (yr{sup -1}), use of these results as input to the site response model leads to ground motion values for the repository that most engineeri… more
