Abstracts

Description: Recording of Jonty Harrison's Abstracts. This work includes 2 recordings. One of which is simply the produced electroacoustic tape on its own. The other is a live performance of the tape along with the University of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra performing on top of it. The composer's goal was for the tape to create musical continuity while the live performers abstract upon it in varying ways.

Description: Recording of Alain Basso's Acéré. The intention was to create a piece about war. Different object sounds were recorded in the studio, to have a wider palette of percussion sounds. Acousmaclarine

Description: Recording of Jean-Louis Poliart's Acousmaclarine. This work consists of two recordings: one of the electronic tape only, the other of the electronic tape and bass clarinet performance on top. Description: A very short but important piece. It was the last composition produced in our old studio (the one offered by the Di Tella Institute that you visited at CICMAT in 1974). African Procession

Description: Recording of Ari Taskinen's African Procession. This piece is based on recordings of wildlife the composer took in East Africa. He also played certain phrases with various percussion. The composer separates the track into two parts: the first represents the nighttime and the second represents the day. The end of the track uses primarily synthesized sounds and creates a sense of a never-ending cycle of life.

The afterbirth of apollo

Description: Recording of Eric Lyon's The afterbirth of appollo. This work is for electronics and has a lot of noise elements. The synthetic sounds are harsh and posses an analog sound. This sound feels continuous and even though there is movement in the sound, the construction continues to stay the same. There is a true representation of electronic sound in this work, instead of shying away from the noise, this work embraces it and explores the importance of balance and musical transitions.

Description: Recording of Roderik de Man's Air to Air. This work was composed at the request of the European Wind Ensemble and was dedicated to them. It premiered in Ysbreker, Amsterdam. Almost all the sounds on the tape were derived from flute, trumpet, and clarinet sounds. The work was meant to be a dialogue between the tape recording and the live performers.

Description: Recording of Germán Toro Perez's Aire. This recording consists of two movements for tape: I. Aliento and II. Humedad. The composer used material from the piece "Stichwörter" by Georg Riedl, which consists of live bass clarinet and electronics. Description: Recording of Atsushi Yamaji's Ajikan. This piece is music for a funeral. Its ceremonial landscape is on a method for deep meditation in native religion and for harmonizing with universal nature.
