Oro, Argento & Legno

Description: Oro, Argento & Legno ("Gold, Silver & Wood") is once again a large-scale work, this time for flute (or rather for flutist, who is asked to play not only a regular flute but also an alto flute and piccolo) and computer. It is a virtuoso work requiring a great deal of technical precision and agility from the flutist who at the same time is given ample opportunity to display his powers of musical interpretation. The form of the pie… more

Ou Symphonia, ou Mélodia, Oudé Mousiki

Description: Second work commissioned by the "Mafilm" Company of Budapest, "Ou Symphonia, or Melodia, Oudé Mousiki" (no consonance, no melody, no music), is a "conceptual" work of music, performed at the Hungarian Radio Studio in 1987. It is entirely based on a text by Sextus Empiricus, which is part of his treatise "against mathematicians" and speaks of the impossible existence of music. This text, read by the composer, is electronically transformed and used without any modification in its temporal order. … more

Palimpset Cycle

Description: "Sound recycling" would be the perfect term for Gerald Trimmel's composition cycle called "Palimpsest". When Trimmel performed his first "Palimpsest" in 1985, he did not consider this work as a final result. The following compositions were characterized by various procedures of sound accumulations and structural rearrangements. A lot of acoustic ready mades and complex structured sound elements were inserted, which first covered up and by and by extinguished the older ones. So the shrinkin… more

Papalotl

Description: Papalotl (from the Nahuatl word butterfly), started off as a revision of my previous work for piano and tape Luz Caterpillard. As the work evolved, I realised the piece was taking a completely different path from the one originally intended, and the result was an entirely new piece. My Papalotl is a toccata like, a tour de force for both pianist and its counterpart on tape. As in some of my previous works, the concerns are primarilly rhytmic and demand an extreme coordination between the two pa… more

Pas de Voix

Description: When asked to compose a piece for an all-Samuel Beckett concert in Los Angeles (including works by Cage, Dodge and Gnazzo), I determined not to act a text of the renowned existentialist writer but rather to sample his voice and manipulate the recording to formulate the substance of the music. Upon learning that Mr. Beckett does not permit his voice to be taped under any circumstances, I proceeded to record the lobby of his apartment building in Paris, the open-air Metro stop across the street, … more

Pennsylvania Dream

Description: I dedicated this piece to my American friends as an expression of thanks for their hospitality during my wonderful stay in the Lehigh Valley in Pennsylvania. The work consists of a few short musical images conveying a carefree atmosphere. Contained in it is a quotation from Chopin's Polonaise as well as a phrase alluding to Polish folk music - a reference to those inhabitants of the Valley who are descendants of Polish immigrants. It was not my intention to compose program music. The piece is r… more

Per Formen Acus Transire

Description: "Per Foramen Acus Transire" is dedicated, in memoriam, to Andrei Tarkovsky, the Russian film-maker who died of cancer in December 1986. Tarkovsky's work communicates a deeply personal struggle to break through the constraints of a material(istic) world to "an awareness of the eternal within the finite, the spiritual within matter, the limitless given form." ... "Art affirms all that is best in man – hope, faith, love, beauty, prayer." (from "Sculpting in Time" by A. Tarkovsky.) This composition… more

The Photograph

Description: The Photograph was conceived in two separate studios with very disparate equipment. It is using vocal, string, and percussion source sounds, as well as keyboard and electric guitar sound. The former from one studio, the latter from the other studio studio. No "real" acoustic instruments were used although they sound like "real instruments or voices. Different methods of sampling were used except for electric guitar. The metaphor for the piece is the photograph because as a photograph is a "capt… more

Pranâ (Souffle de vie)

Description: Pranâ (breath of life) Where are you from? What are you doing here? Pranâ is a piece that describes the process of arriving on earth. The temporal organization of this coin is managed by the number of gold. The majority of the sound material was obtained by sound recording with microphone. Sampling was the main source of material transformation.

Projectile

Description: This short piece begins by launching a number of musical ideas, almost at once, at the listener. These elements (single short notes separated in time; soft sustained tones or chords; rapid flourishes whose contours are more readily perceived than the individual pitches that make them up; aggressive crash-like and ratchet-like gestures) are not so much "themes" which "develop" as sound-objects which continually reappear in varied guises and are juxtaposed/superimposed in different ways. As the w… more

Projections at Dawn

Description: "Projections at Dawn" is a musical reflection on a pure, unpolluted environment. Through the play, the clarinetist extends elements of height in the electronic music. The opening suggests calm, tranquility, the relaxing atmosphere of the shadow. The middle part, a cadenza clarinet that eventually leads to a moving shadow. Sun dance with the clarinet looming through the texture of the finale. Commissioned by F. Gerard Errante with the financial assistance of the Art Council "Queen Elizabeth II" … more

Quartet Ambar

Description: Quartet Ambar is a piece entirely computed by a recursive composition algorithm that decides melodic, dynamic and rhythmic events, and is played by a Yamaha CX5MII microcomputer that controls a set of 8 Yamaha TF1 modules. It is built on a four-part structure that retrograde from half of the room to the end. The first of the parts is a set of "solos" with four voices on which the speech is expressed, then the second part serves as support for "duettos", the third one for "trios" and finally, th… more

Rappel II

Description: Recording of Elżbieta Sikora's Rappel II. Rappel II was written between June 1987 and June 1988. The work is made up of various modules: evolving, they meet in ever-changing configurations. in bits and pieces, melodies, in their anachronism and their sometimes decadent rhythms, making their way through increasingly thick sound screens, until they disappear forever in the final crescendo. A fairly brief first part in which the elements are stated. A sequence with a defined rhythm, accentuated, b… more

Robert Johnson Sampler

Description: When I first began to play with tape music in the early-1970s, I was fascinated with my ability to use recordings of whole musical phrases as the basis of my electronic works. As I began to use computers a few years later, it seemed like this simple process was beyond the capabilities of the new medium: too expensive, too much memory and disk space would be required. Then, in the mid-1980s, along came inexpensive digital samplers. A Robert Johnson Sampler was my first excursion into working… more

Round the Corners of Purgatory

Description: Rounds the Corners of Purgatory was completed in August 1987 at the Electroacoustic Music Studio of the Tel-Aviv Academy of Music, Israel. Various pipes provide the source for most sounds. Pipes were played using percussion beaters, a cello bow, blowing air through them and splashing them in water. Some pipes have a long sustaining sounds, rather like a vibraphone. Other sounds were derived from a 10-foot long pole, using 2 microphones: one laid inside its far end and the other recording the co… more

Rumeurs (Place Ransbeck)

Description: A rumor is a sound in the air. Elusive, we seek to capture it, fearing that it may concern us, that it may hold a part of shameful truth. Fleeting, it cannot be caught. As soon as it materializes, it vanishes, leaving only traces in our memories. Here, nothing is certain. Where does this sound come from? What is it made of? The piece endlessly oscillates between pure sound and meaning, without ever resolving to one or the other. The piece is at the limit between texture and image, between mater… more

Secuencia VII

Description: Belongs to a series of pieces for solo instrument and tape where I tried to explore the interaction between the soloist and its pre-recorded material processed at the studio together with pure electronic material which kind expands the instrumental environment. The samples were recorded by Oriol Rossinyol who premiered the piece. This Secuencia is dedicated to Lluis Callejo (1930-1987), one of the founding members of Phonos, composer and researcher who developed a lot of studio hardware, from m… more

Sekia

Description: "Spoke" is a phenomenon observed in the rings of planets such as Saturn and Uranus. These are radial rays that cross the layers of the ring. This movement of the rings is very important in the composition of my acoustic space, where you can have the impression of zero gravity in the dark with your eyes closed. When the "Spoke" is made, the radial lines can sometimes be motionless, other times they oscillate slowly responding to different speeds of each layer of the ring. In a space, the horizon… more
