Saluan

Description: Recording of Jos Janssen's Saluang. This piece was created on the basis of the saluang flute playing of the people of North Sumatra in Indonesia. Saluang playing is a very meditative way of playing with the technique of circular breathing. This work was originally made for Teresa Birks, a human rights watcher in Indonesia.

Meca mecanica

Description: Recording of Alain Basso's Meca mecanica. This work was created as part of the Bourges 2004 Synthèse Festival. This work combines two types of sounds: themes of Western music which include the flute, orchestra, violin, and barrel organ, as well as oriental themes. The title was derived by the idea that instruments themselves can be defined as a type of mechanism which is used to create sound.

Preludium and canon for bagpipe sounds

Description: Recording of Göran Lindsjö's Preludium and canon for bagpipe sounds. The composer has used recordings of nine tones that were produced by a bagpipe that were then transformed and assembled together to create the work. The composer notes that neither the preludium nor the canon is written in genuine folklore style, but rather the only folklore characteristic about the composition is the bagpipe sound.

Description: Recording of Phill Niblock's Parker's Altered Mood aka Owed to bird. This work was created based on the theme of the American composer/musician Charlie Parker. Udi tula

Description: Recording of Raphaël Panis' Udi tula. This electronics work is a small study based on a Hindu rhythm, "Adi Tâla", played on different synthesizers. The composer describes this piece as a Western transposition of a musical element coming from a foreign tradition. It is up to the listener to hear what they want from the piece and possibly detect something out of the ordinary.

Ritorni

Description: Recording of Pavel Kopecký's Ritorni. This is a work for clarinet and electroacoustics. In order to create the richest unity between the two sounds, the composer formed the electroacoustic base entirely from modified clarinet samples. At the concert performance the sound of the soloist is recorded with a microphone and modified by a sound processor.

Bambo intervention

Description: Recording of Andy Birtwistle's Bambo intervention. This piece explores the ideological space between the bamboo flute and the tape recorder as well as between Western desires and Eastern traditions. Description: Recording of Lucio Edilberto Cuellar Camargo's Variaciones en seis objetos sonoros. This work is a set of variations based on six sound objects that represent a multicultural sonic world. Description: Recording of Karine Dumont's L'eau et le vent me racontent à l'oreille.... This work was inspired by Georges Sand's text in which the Master Ringers listen to what the water and the wind tell them. The composer poses the question of what the rain would say if it was given a voice and explores all the possibilities. The composer supposes that "they just grant us the right to listen and listen to their story".

In the leap second

Description: Recording of Artem Vassiliev's In the leap second. This piece is the composer's attempt to creatively reinterpret the phenomenon of a "leap second". There are certain acoustic parameters and structural proportions in this piece which are determined by numerical relations between the two different systems of time measurement: Ephemeris Time and Coordinated Universal Time.

Earbitten

Description: Recording of Asbjørn Flø's Earbitten. This composition is made up of various sound materials that the composer chose to use processing techniques on that would preserve the "ugly" character in the original material rather than the "beautiful" which is more commonly sought after. This piece reflects on the inherent aesthetics of malfunctioning technology as well by beginning with sounds of a crashing computer that turns into music.
