Drift

Description: Recording of John Elmsly's Drift. The tape part uses real-time granular synthesis to processed viola samples. Bowed and plucked sounds has been treated in this way to produce a large-scale mosaic of sounds to background the solo viola part, which explores playing techniques involving small changes in pitch. Such as, fingers, in closer than normal position, produce rhythmic patterns on very small intervals and create a very fluid melody in the upper reaches of the instrument.

Drones 5

Description: Recording of Warren Burt Dronesz. This piece is from a large collection of drone pieces. The purpose is to stay in one harmonic world for a very long time. In order to establish a complex harmonic structure, changing series of chords would fade in and out. In the first section, the harmonies are bases around subharmonic relationships. In the second section, small intervals result in just intonation intervals. There is also "noisebands" which are cluster chord harmonies.

First Tangent to the Given Curve

Description: Recording of James Dashow's First Tangent to the Given Curve. This work is for piano and electronic sounds. The title of the work comes from an essay by Michel Serres, which captures rather nicely the sense of the music, the sense of the composition.The musical relationship between the computer and piano is rather precise. The pitches provide the basis for the sounds, which were created by the MUSIC30 software by the composer.
