L'arbre égayé

Description: Recording of Ragnar Grippe's L'arbre égayé. The title, "L'arbre égayé," refers to "the cut tree," but the composer does stress that it also means "the reviving tree." This reference to a cut tree is intentional as a tie-in and homage to the composer's experience (20 years prior to the composition of this piece) at Groupe de Recherches Musicales de l'ORTF in Paris under the direction of Pierre Schaeffer. As Grippe explains: "This piece - without any overambitious zeals - is a hommage to the scho… more

Conversation

Description: This work was composed in 1985. It uses voices recorded in Japan and Thailand, hence the title of "Conversation", although the voices are generally used in a more musical than semantic way. The instruments respond to these voices in different ways during the course of the work, which also gives it a conversational character. This work can be considered as a continuation of "Orchestra" and "Ten Temperaments" in that the image of the sounds resumes the orchestra like a prototype. The recordings o… more

Le mécanicien effréné

Description: Recording of Ragnar Grippe's Le mécanicien effréné. Voices are explicitly mentioned by the composer as acting as instruments; no language is intended or represented in this performance. This piece follows the composer's "symphonic" approach to timbre and construction of sound, wherein every sound is a composite of several included timbres, in a way that the composer identifies as being specifically contrary to the technique known as Musique Concrète of Groupe de Recherches Musicales in Paris. Suspended choirs

Description: Recording of Ragnar Grippe's Suspended choirs. The material is described by the composer as somewhat eclectic, with a deviation from a "pure" electro-acoustic sense, instead including several influences from many different styles. The compositional work started after some two months of programming of real-time control devices controlling filtering, reverb, chorus and pan functions. The resulting sounds were then used for the composition. The name of this piece is derived from the "gliding" choi… more

Wals van Kwart voor Middermacht

Description: The "Wal...." is an interactive composition for two computers and flute. Musical information, initially produced by the flutist, is transcribed to midi-code and digital loudness information. On basis of this information, the computers assemble a structural and harmonic environment in which the music is laid. Because the composer chooses the initial musical information, he knows this environment and is able to produce a score. In the composition an attempt is made to produce a balance between th… more
