Effetti Collaterali (for clarinet in A and computer generated electronic sounds)

Description: The specified pitches are made to generate their own accompanying frequencies, generally inharmonic with respect to the pitches themselves, as a result of FM or AM procedures. Each interval, or, in fact, each pitch-pair (or if you don't want to limit yourself to the chromatic scale, each pair of arbitrarily decided upon frequencies) can generate several possible spectra, but the similarity in sound quality between kinds of spectra quickly reduces to a limited number of readily manageable famili… more

Archimedes: Scene II

Description: This second scene begins with Archimedes, now a young man, emerging from the laughter of scene i; he begins to realize that he undertands mathematics, more than undertands it, he can master it, create it, think it, live and breathe it. The music is composed for a wide variety of geometrical images being drawn and animated on the planetarium dome, in synchronization with a live mime who with his gestures, causes the images to appear, to move, to transform and to engulf. The music is designe… more

Conditional Assemblies

Description: Recording of James Dashow's Conditional Assemblies, quadrophonic work. At the beginning of the piece each group is given a characteristic timbre and textural treatment, and the rest of the work develops, mixes and transforms the pitch- timbre-procedure relationships. The work is in two major sections each of which consists of two overlapping subsections. Conditional Assem… more

Vercoe); post-synthesis digital mixing was completed with ICMS (G. Tisato). Disclosures has been recorded on a NEUMA CD, Boston, MA., wit… more

Effetti Collaterali

Description: Recording of James Dashow's Effetti Collaterali performed by the clarinetist Phillip Rehfeldt. The composer's first effort in using systematically his concept of AM and FM spectra as inharmonic harmonizations of specific dyads. The specified pitches are made to generate their own accompanying frequencies, generally inharmonic with respect to the pitches themselves, as a result of FM or AM procedures. Each interval or each pitch-pair can generate several possible spectra, but the similarity in… more

Mappings

Description: Recording of James Dashow's Mappings. This piece is in three large sections, each of which explores a particular kind of texture by developing the composition or structural possibilities implied in the timbral relationships between the cello and the electronic sounds. At the same time, each section contains forward and/or backward references to later/earlier material. In the third section, the cello/tape integration is brought to its maximum by turning the solo instrument into what might be cal… more

Oro, Argento & Legno

Description: Oro, Argento & Legno ("Gold, Silver & Wood") is once again a large-scale work, this time for flute (or rather for flutist, who is asked to play not only a regular flute but also an alto flute and piccolo) and computer. It is a virtuoso work requiring a great deal of technical precision and agility from the flutist who at the same time is given ample opportunity to display his powers of musical interpretation. The form of the pie… more

Partial Distances

Description: Recording of James Dashow's Partial Distances. It is the last purely analog electronic work Dashow composed. There are a few sounds in this piece generated by computer but significantly transformed and altered by analog techniques of one kind or another, such as dynamic filtering, delay line processing, extreme velocity manipulations, etc. The piece was made by the old tape cut and splice method, mixing and re-mixing pairs of ReVoxes onto a third one, and avoiding tape hiss with the newly inven… more

Sequence Symbols

Description: Sequence Symbols exemplifies the composer's exploration of the concept of modulation spectra considered as inharmonic "harmonizations" or chords. The gradual transformation of basic note groups related by common tones provides the underlying pitch structure. Each group so derived in turn furnishes the intervals that are treated as generating dyads for the inharmonic chord-spectra. Chord-spectra can be enlarged by the simultaneous sounding of the chord with its transposition at a desired interv… more
