Quatour

Description: Recording of Yves Daoust's Quatour. "In composing this work, I thought a lot about Beethoven's Grande Fugue, Opus 133. There is this incredible tension in writing, almost inhuman, as if Beethoven had wanted to shatter the instruments, as if he wanted to reach the limit beyond, which opens expressive areas inaccessible to acoustic instruments - if not in the dream - but that the magic and artifices of electroacoustic means can now explore. To search for inflections and articulations characteri… more

Temps Fixé

Description: Recording of Yves Daoust's Temps Fixé. This work was commissioned by Media Arts Networks with the help of the Canada Council for the Arts. This work was inspired by a visit the composer made to a singer friend who now, as an elderly individual, lives in an assisted living facility. The composer was struck by the vision of "a worn man, deteriorated by time". The work represents not death but the idea of time and the unstoppable nature of it through the lens of a singer frozen in time at the heig… more

Water Music

Description: The idea for this piece came to me on a beautiful spring day as I listened, amazed, the music produced by droplets falling melting icicles. I was fascinated by the sonic complexity, the beauty of such a banal natural phenomenon, which usually receives very little attention. A channel had been dug. Melting in the slush, she would probably end up joining the swollen stream at the bottom of the stream. Everything was there: the climate, the tracks of development, the formal idea. Just be attentive. more

Solar Rain

Description: This piece was constructed with sound material taken from the analysis of samples containing the composers voice and electric guitar (Fender Stratocaster). The analysis and synthesis of the sounds were realized on the UPIC (Unite Polyagogique Informatique du CEMAMu) system, invented by the Iannis Xenakis, at the CCMR Studio(Center of Contemporary Music Research) in Athens, Greece. The resulting sounds were recorded on tape and various tape loops were created and mixed together in Era Studios,… more

Fili Grani

Description: Recording of Riccardo Dapelo's Fili Grani. For clarinet and tape. The work is a part of a project in which to different composers are assigned two verses of E. Sanguineti's "TIPARCHETIPI". The human voice is stretched until its single sonic components are perceptible. At this level subtle variations are made on the time-expanded sounds, by interpolating grains of the bass clarinet between the voice grains. The so obtained layers are then rearranged at different rates, creating a spectral "cont… more

Sul cuore della terra

Description: Recording of Riccardo Dapelo's Sul cuore della terra. These verses by Italian poet Salvatore Quasimodo can describe completely the sensations felt in the incredible and wild countries of Barbagia, Barona and Supramonte (Sardinia-Italy). Often the most interesting phenomena of human experiences occur in borderlands, lands only superficially scratched by processes of history. The isle of Sardinia is one of these lands, an extreme land, in which flows something ancient and mysterious, primitive an… more

I suoni che distilli

Two Studies on Video Synthesis

Description: Recording of Riccardo Dapelo's Two Studies on Video Synthesis. Zu klugen Gestirnen

Description: Recording of Riccardo Dapelo's Zu klugen Gestirnen. For soprano and tape. The work is derived from a picture poetry of Paul Klee. The composer tries to separate elements common to Klee's theory. The starting point is a small sound gesture: an upward exponential function. This function shapes all the steps of the work in a motion from noise to sound. The attempt is to build a self-similar structure with matching between small details and larger forms.
