“Liberated from Serfdom”: Willis Conover and the Tallinn Jazz Festival of 1967

Description: This book chapter presents the Charles Lloyd Quartet’s performance at the 1967 Tallinn Jazz Festival, which broke the “stagecraft” of prior jazz diplomacy with the Soviet Union, and proceeded despite numerous official attempts to derail it, as a case study in the effectiveness of Willis Conover’s approach over the twelve years since his Voice of America program began in 1955.
