Flight investigation of a stall-warning indicator for operation under icing conditions

Description: Report presenting an investigation to determine whether some characteristic of the boundary layer could be used to provide warning of the increase in stalling speed of a wing caused by ice formations on the leading edge. Results were analyzed by referring the total pressures at the rake to the free-stream total pressure, static pressure at the rake, free-stream static pressure, and static pressure from wind-tip swiveling head.

Flight investigation of an NACA ice-detector suitable for use as a rate-of-icing indicator

Description: Report presenting an ice detector that can serve as a basis for a rate-of-icing indicator. The instrument consists of a wire screen and a pitot tube mounted behind the screen with both enclosed in a cylindrical shell. Observed data and some possibilities for future development are provided.

A flight investigation of internally balanced sealed ailerons in the presence of a balanced split flap

Description: Report presenting flight tests made with a modified Ryan ST airplane to determine the effect on aileron characteristics of various arrangements of balanced split flaps covering that portion of the wing span occupied by the ailerons. With the flaps fully extended, the aileron effectiveness was reduced by approximately 18 percent of the effectiveness measured with ailerons alone.

A flight investigation of short-period longitudinal oscillations of an airplane with free elevator

Description: Report presenting a flight investigation to check the results of a theoretical analysis of longitudinal stability of an airplane with free controls. Tests used a Fairchild XR2K-1 airplane on which the weight moment and the aerodynamic balance of the elevator were varied to bring it into a condition where unstable short-period oscillations were encountered.

Flight investigation of the performance and cooling characteristics of a long-nose high-inlet-velocity cowling on the XP-42 airplane

Description: Report presenting the results of a series of flight tests of the maximum speed and cooling characteristics in high-speed level flight and in climb of the XP-42 airplane equipped with a long-nose high-inlet-velocity cowling. The results indicated that a maximum speed of 338 miles per hour at 870 horsepower at 17,000 feet was achievable, which is above the engine critical altitude. A Flight Investigation of the Stability of a Towed Body

Description: Report presenting flight tests to determine whether a towed body that was designed to meet certain specifications met the stability specification, which required that angular deviations in flight should be less than 1 degree. The requirement was met in flight in smooth air, but not in rough air, where the rolling motions were considerably larger.

Flight Measurements of the Aileron Characteristics of a Grumman F4F-3 Airplane

Description: "The aileron characteristics of a Grumman F4F-3 airplane were determined in flight by means of NACA recording and indicating instruments. The results show that the ailerons met NACA minimum requirements for satisfactory control throughout a limited speed range. A helix angle of approximately 0.07 radian was produced with flaps down at speeds from 90 to 115 miles per hour indicated airspeed and with flaps up from 115 to 200 miles per hour" (p. 1).

Flight Measurements of the Lateral Control Characteristics of an Airplane Equipped With a Combination Aileron-Spoiler Control System

Description: Report presenting flight tests conducted to measure the lateral-control characteristics of an airplane, equipped with a lateral-control system, in which as the flaps are lowered the ailerons droop and a gradual transition of lateral control from ailerons to spoilers takes place. The variation of maximum rolling velocity with lateral stick movement as obtained in abrupt rudder-locked rolls was satisfactorily smooth except when control was by spoiler alone.

Flight Tests of Modifications to Improve the Aileron Control Characteristics of a North American XP-51 Airplane (AC No. 41-38)

Description: Investigations were undertaken to improve the ailerons of a P-51 fighter so as to obtain greater effectiveness without increasing the stick forces. Modifications consisted of increasing the deflection range of the aileron to 70 percent and changing the original concave section to a thick section with beveled trailing edge. Results of the modified ailerons showed an increase in effectiveness over the original aileron of 70 percent at low speed and 55 percent at high speeds.

Flight tests of NACA jet-propulsion exhaust stacks on the supermarine spitfire airplane

Description: Report presenting an investigation of the Supermarine Spitfire airplane equipped with exhaust stacks designed according to the jet-propulsion exhaust-stack system developed by the NACA. An increase in the high speed of the airplane of 6 mph was obtained as compared with the airplane equipped with the Rolls Royce exhaust system. Results regarding performance and exhaust-flame visibility are provided.

The Formation of Ice on Aircraft

Description: "The phenomenon accompanying the formation of ice on aircraft has been frequently discussed. The consequences of ice formation have been briefly analyzed in an article , but a definite physical solution of the problem has not been reached up to the present. Most of the authors agree that subcooled water droplets play a prominent part, but they fail to specify the exact manner in which this occurs" (p. 1).

Description: Report presenting testing of a model of the Douglas DC-3 airplane for several loading conditions. The load factor for the complete airplane, for the horizontal tail, and the force to start moving the elevator downward were estimated for some steady spins. Description: Report presenting an investigation of propellers designed specifically for pusher operation behind fixed contravanes on a large-scale model of a four-engine airplane. In the test, the wing trailing edge was twisted to serve as a contravane and to produce the rotating inflow required for optimum propulsive efficiency. Description: "The equations that describe the operation of a heat exchanger - the equations for pressure drop, rate of heat transfer, and power expenditure - have been put into nondimensional, generalized form. These generalized equations can be used for constructing selection charts for various types of aircraft heat exchangers.
