Eddy Transport in Liquid-Metal Heat Transfer

Description: This report seeks to "develop a practical method of evaluating the eddy diffusivity of heat transfer for liquid metals, so that it can be incorporated into the more or less standard theoretical methods to give heat transfer coefficients which are in reasonable agreement with experimental facts"--from introduction.

The Effect of a Deuteron Macrobeam on Greying of Hair

Description: Black mice have been exposed to a deuteron macrobeam to assess the greying response from heavy primary cosmic ray particles. It is found that greying depends solely on a direct hit by the radiation on the bulb of the follicle. It is concluded that the heavy primary cosmic ray particles would be expected to cause greying of the hair. This result strengthens earlier conclusions indicating that these particles will cause very minor somatic damage in mammals.

The Effect of Departure from the Optimum Operating Conditions on the Production Cost of Electricity from Gas-Cooled Nuclear Power Plants

Description: The second partial differentials of the production cost equation are derived in a generalized and non-dimensional form in order to determine the effect on production cost of electricity from a gas-cooled nuclear power plant of departure from optimum operating conditions. Fuel element surface temperatures up to 650 degrees C, production costs up to 1d. (A)/kwh and reactor coolant temperature rises up to half the maximum surface temperature are included. The most significant parameter is the rati… more

Effect of Eddy Diffusion on Temperatures in a Fixed Bed, Particulate-Fueled Nuclear Reactor

Description: Abstract: To assess diffusion's importance, the temperature distribution in a cylindrical reactor is derived for a coolant with uniform properties and velocity, taking into account both radial and axial diffusion, for a cosine-J0 power distribution. The fractional temperature rise of the coolant is found to be [chemical formula] where E(z) = [sin(z) + sin(Z)]/2 sin(Z), z= π x/2′, x is the axial distance from the core center, -H and ′ are the core half-height and extrapolated half-height, -H≤x≤… more

Effect of Explosive Impacting on Uranium

Description: Abstract: The tensile and yield strengths of both cast and wrought uranium discs were substantially increased by explosively impacting them at room temperature and at 375 deg F. However, the room-temperature impacting caused gross damage in the cast material and slight internal damage in the wrought material at the highest impacting pressures. Impacting at 375 deg F, which is just above the brittle-ductile transition temperature for uranium, was the most effective method for increasing the stre… more

Effect of Fluoride Ions on the Aqueous Corrosion of Zirconium Alloys

Description: Abstract. A review has been made of the effects of fluoride ions on the corrosion behavior of zirconium alloys in high-temperature water. Corrosion was found to occur as the result of contamination of the water or the zirconium surface. A major source of fluorides is undue delay in rinsing the HF-HNO3 pickling solution during surface preparation. The oxide on corrosion-resistant material has been found to contain up to 7600 ppm fluoride from this source. The threshold concentration of fluoride … more

The Effect of Gallium on Plutonium Assay

Description: Several of the plutonium assay methods were reexamined as part of a continuing effort to make improvements in these frequently used analyses. This investigation included a study of the controlled-potential coulometric, amperometric, potentiometric, and photometric titration methods and their applications to assays of delta-stabilized and alpha plutonium metal.

Effect of Gamma Radiation on the Physical Properties of Elastics

Description: This article presents data on the effects of gamma radiation on the physical properties of a number of different classes of plastics materials of construction which were screened to determine their capabilities and limitations for service in applications where ionizing radiation exists. The irradiations were carried out in air at ambient temperature at normal atmospheric pressure to various gamma radiation doses up to 1*10^9 r depending upon the stability of the materials to radiation exposure.… more

The Effect of Ionizing Radiation on the Optical and Electrical Properties of the Alkali Halides : Presented at the American Society for Testing Materials, 66th Annual Meeting, Atlantic City, New Jersey, June 23-28, 1963.

Description: Abstract: Various mechanisms for the formation of point defects in ionic crystals are considered. Their probable importance as a function of the energy of the ionizing radiation and the temperature at which the irradiation takes place is discussed. Complex centers formed from aggregates of simple point defects are reviewed and their occurrence considered in terms of the expected spatial distribution of the point defects. The effect of high energy x rays and protons on the ionic conductivity is … more

Effect of Layering Above a Refractor on the Character of the Refraction Arrival

Description: Abstract. The waveform or character of a refraction arrival has become internationally important because of its use in determining source parameters. An approximate theoretical machine calculation has been made to show the effect of layering above a refractor on the character of the refraction arrival. The method is illustrated with a geologic model taken from the Edwards Plateau area of West Texas. The effect of the Edwards limestone, Comanche, and Trinity formations on the refraction from the… more

Effect of Long-Range Interactions on Order

Description: Harrison and Paskin (HP) have calculated the ordering energy of β-CuZn using recent theoretical techniques of treating electron screening and Mott's polar model of an alloy. Good agreement is obtained between the calculated total energy of the order-disorder transformation and specific heat measurements. A consequence of the HP calculation is that the ordering energy is long-range and oscillates in sign. Walker and Keating recently measured the neutron diffuse scattering of β-CuZn above the cri… more

The Effect of Mitotic Cycle Duration on Chromosome Breakage in Meristematic Cells of Pisum Sativum

Description: One of the more apparent differences between acute and chronic irradiation is that exposure in the former is generally confined to a small fraction of a single mitotic cycle while in the latter; exposure of mitotically active tissue usually involves at least several cycles. Because of this difference, the number of cells in each stage of interphase would be of primary importance in acute radiation experiments since radiosensitivity is not the same in the G1, S and G2 periods. The duration of th… more
