Conceptual design of a 10MW regenerative isobutane geothermal power plant. Technical report No. 18

Description: At present, there are basically three different systems for converting energy in geothermal fluid into power: vapor-flashing system, total flow system, and binary system. A comparison of the power production processes was made on the basis of work output in Kwh per 1000 pounds of geothermal fluid for self flowing wells with wellhead pressure of 100 psia and for wells with downhole pumps. For simplicity, the assumptions were made that the enthalpy of the geothermal fluid in the reservoir is appr… more

Conceptual Design of a 2000 kW Nuclear Heat Source Suitable for Space Electric Power.

Description: A conceptual design of a 2000 kW/sub/t Rankine system for nuclear-electric space power is described. The system includes a unique reactor-boiler unit operating at 1500°K that utilizes heatpipes in lieu of a conventionally pump primary loop. An efficient heatpipe radiator rejects waste hea at 1035°K. Overall system efficiency is 18.8% yielding a net electrical output of 375 kW. The system specific mass is 10 g/W including a generous shadow shield for unmanned payloads.

Conceptual design of a black liquor gasification pilot plant

Description: In July 1985, Champion International completed a study of kraft black liquor gasification and use of the product gases in a combined cycle cogeneration system based on gas turbines. That study indicated that gasification had high potential as an alternative to recovery boiler technology and offered many advantages. This paper describes the design of the plant, the construction of the pilot plant, and finally presents data from operation of the plant.

Conceptual Design of a Capture Rf System for Muon Colliders.

Description: A conceptual RF System design provides a basis for a more detailed engineering study to explore the technical issues involved in fabricating and testing a capture RF system in a proton-driver target experiment. A large-bore 71 MHz cavity design is detailed which is self-consistent with a proton-driver target experiment at BNL. Conceptual design of a centrifugal CO{sub 2} cleaning device. Final report/project accomplishments summary

Description: The L.A.W. Group, Inc., Cryokinetics Division designs and manufactures cryogenic cleaning devices in their Wichita, Kansas, facility. The L.A.W. Group, Inc., Cryokinetics Division identified a market need for a new cryogenic cleaning device that would generate a high level of kinetic energy at a lower operating pressure and noise level. This market need is being generated because the existing products when operated at high kinetic energy levels create an excessive amount of noise and consume a … more

Conceptual Design of a CERMET NTR Fission Core Using Multiphysics Modeling Techniques

Description: An initial pre-conceptual CERMET Nuclear Thermal Propulsion reactor system is investigated within this paper. Reactor configurations are investigated where the fuel consists of 60 vol.% UO2 and 40 vol.% W where the UO2 consists of Gd2O3 concentrations of 5 and 10 mol.%.Gd2O3. The fuel configuration consisting of 5 mol.% UO2 was found to have a total mass of 2761 kg and a thrust to weight ratio of 4.10 and required a coolant channel surface area to fueled volume ratio of approximately 15.0 in or… more

Conceptual design of a charged particle beam energy spectrometer utilizing transition radiation grating

Description: A new technique of measuring the energy spectrum of a charged particle beam using optical transition radiation is presented in this paper. The charged particle beam energy spectrum can be studied by analyzing the optical spectrum of the optical transition radiation produced in a multi-foil configuration. This type of energy spectrometer can have a very large energy acceptance which can not be matched by a simple conventional magnetic dipole spectrometer. The theory of transition radiation from … more

Conceptual design of a coal-fired MHD retrofit. Final technical report

Description: Coal-fired magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) technology is ready for its next level of development - an integrated demonstration at a commercial scale. The development and testing of MHD has shown its potential to be the most efficient, least costly, and cleanest way to burn coal. Test results have verified a greater than 99% removal of sulphur with a potential for greater than 60% efficiency. This development and testing, primarily funded by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), has progressed through… more

Conceptual design of a commercial tokamak hybrid reactor fueling system

Description: A conceptual design of a fuel injection system for CTHR (Commercial Tokamak Hybrid Reactor) is discussed. Initially, relative merits of the cold-fueling concept are compared with those of the hot-fueling concept; that is, fueling where the electron temperature is below 1 eV is compared with fueling where the electron temperature exceeds 100 eV. It is concluded that cold fueling seems to be somewhat more free of drawbacks than hot fueling. Possible implementation of the cold-fueling concept is e… more

Conceptual design of a common coil dipole for VLHC

Description: Superconducting magnet technology and cost reduction are key issues in the R and D effort towards a post-LHC, 100 TeV hadron collider. A dipole field of 10-12 T at 4.5 K operating temperature results in acceptable machine length and refrigeration power requirements, and allows taking advantage of synchrotron radiation damping to achieve low beam emittance. In this paper, the conceptual design of a react-and-wind common coil dipole is presented, which aims at these operating parameters with mini… more

Conceptual design of a continuous fluorinator experimental facility (CFEF)

Description: A conceptual design has been made of a circulating salt system, consisting principally of a fluorinator and reduction column, to demonstrate uranium removal from the salt by fluorination. The fluorinator vessel wall will be protected from fluorine corrosion by a frozen salt film. The circulating salt in the fluorinator will be kept molten by electrical heating that simulates fission product heating in an actual MSBR system.

Conceptual Design of a Coupled Breeding Superheating Reactor, CBSR

Description: The conceptual design of the Coupled Breeding Superheating Reactor, CBSR, for achieving a positive breeding gain and for producing 65 Mw of electric power is presented. The design combines a steam-cooled fast region and a nonboiling pressurized light-water-cooled thermal region. The advantage offered by this arrangement as compared with that using a solid moderator in the thermal zone is that, if a power excursion occurs, the water will increase the void content and tend to limit the excursion.… more

Conceptual design of a fluidized bed combustor for volume reduction of waste

Description: A group of research engineers was assembled to investigate novel fluidized bed combustion systems for incinerating low-level radioactive wastes. The goal of this project was to significantly reduce the volume of these wastes in an efficient and environmentally safe manner. The process is to be limited by a maximum temperature of 600 {degrees}C and the waste product was to contain a minimum of waste material produced by the process itself (refractory, absorbents, catalysts, etc.). The approach p… more
