Comparisons of computed and measured three-dimensional velocity fields in a motored two-stroke engine

Description: Computer simulations are compared with measurements of the three-dimensional, unsteady scavenging flows of a motored two-stroke engine. Laser Doppler velocimetry measurements were made on a modified Suzuki DT-85 ported engine. Calculations were performed using KIVA-3, a computer program that efficiently solves the intake and exhaust port flows along with those in the cylinder. Measured and computed cylinder pressures and velocities are compared. Pressures agree well over the cycle as do the vel… more

Comparisons of Finite-Element Code Calculations to Hydrostatically Loaded Subassembly-Duct Experiments

Description: The Liquid Metal Fast Breeder Reactor (LMFBR) core structure consists of a matrix of hexagonal subassembly ducts. Evaluation of the safety aspects of the core structure requires that reliable computational procedures be available to predict the deformation response of the subassembly configuration to postulated local energy releases. Finite-element computer codes have been developed to calculate deflections and strains of a hexcan subassembly wrapper subjected to internal and external dynamic p… more

Comparisons of gyrofluid and gyrokinetic simulations

Description: The gyrokinetic and gyrofluid models show the most promise for large scale simulations of tokamak microturbulence. This paper discusses detailed comparisons of these two complementary approaches. Past comparisons with linear theory have been fairly good, therefore the emphasis here is on nonlinear comparisons. Simulations include simple two dimensional slab test cases, turbulent three dimensional slab cases, and toroidal cases, each modeling the nonlinear evolution of the ion temperature gradie… more

Comparisons of HELIOS Calculated Isotope Concentrations to Measured Values for Several Reactor Systems

Description: Heavy metal and fission product noble gas concentrations in spent fuel from two different PWR'S were calculated using HELIOS and compared to measured results from the literature. It was found that for the U-235/U-238 and Pu-240/Pu-239 isotopic ratios, the HELIOS calculation agreed to within the experimental uncertainty. For the Xe-131/Xe-134 isotopic ratios, HELIOS tended to overestimate the result by up to 4%. Conversely for the Xe-132/Xe-134 ratios, HELIOS underestimated the result by a sligh… more

Comparisons of hydrodynamic beam models with kinetic treatments

Description: Hydrodynamic models have been derived by Mark and Yu and by others to describe energetic self-pinched beams, such as those used in ion-beam fusion. The closure of the Mark-Yu model is obtained with adiabatic assumptions mathematically analogous to those of Chew, Goldberger, and Low for MHD. The other models treated here use an ideal gas closure and a closure by Newcomb based on an expansion in V/sub th//V/sub z/. Features of these hydrodynamic beam models are compared with a kinetic treatment.

Comparisons of irradiation-induced shifts in fracture toughness, crack arrest toughness, and Charpy impact energy in high-copper welds

Description: The Heavy-Section Steel Irradiation (HSSI) Program is examining relative shifts and changes in shape of fracture and crack-arrest toughness versus temperature behavior for two high-copper welds. Fracture toughness 100-MPa{radical}m temperature shifts are greater than Charpy 41-J shifts for both welds. Mean curve fits to the fracture toughness data provide mixed results regarding curve shape changes, but curves constructed as lower boundaries indicate lower slopes. Preliminary crack-arrest tough… more

Comparisons of laboratory wavelength measurements with theoretical calculations for neon-like through lithium-like argon, sulfur, and silicon

Description: Atomic structure codes have a difficult time accurately calculating the wavelengths of many-electron ions without the benefit of laboratory measurements. This is especially true for wavelengths of lines in the extreme ultraviolet and soft x-ray regions. We are using the low-energy capability of the Livermore electron beam ion traps to compile a comprehensive catalog of astrophysically relevant emission lines in support of satellite x-ray observations. Our database includes wavelength measuremen… more

Comparisons of Line Emission from ICF Capsules in 2- and 3-Dimensional Simulations

Description: Hydrodynamic instabilities reduce the yield in inertial confinement fusion (ICF) implosions. Line emission from dopants placed in the capsule can be used to diagnose the extent of the instabilities. This paper presents the results of a large number of 2D simulations and a few 3D simulations of line emission from argon in the DH fuel and titanium placed in the inner layers of the plastic shell of a NOVA ICF capsule. The Simulations have been compared to NOVA experimental data on the ratio of arg… more
