From the summary:"The Results of a Bureau of Mines survey of helium resources are given in this report and comprise gas analyses and accompanying data on more than 2,100 samples that have been collected in 30 States. The survey to determine the Nation's helium resources has been carried on in all natural-gas-producing areas of the United States since the inception of the Government's helium program in 1917. The primary purpose of the report is to present the results of this work in a tabulated form. A secondary purpose is to make public the historical background of the helium survey and to describe the methods of collecting gas samples and analyzing them. Detailed descriptions are given of the analytical equipment and procedures used in making the analyses" (p. 1).

Samples analyzed from late 1947 to around May 1956 are included in this bulletin and augment the samples reported in Bulletin 486" (p. 1).

From the summary: "Results of analyses by the Bureau of Mines of 1,444 samples from oil and gas wells and natural gas pipelines collected from 23 states are presented in the Bulletin in tabular form. The information is from samples collected in the period May 1956 to January 1961 and supplements earlier publications" (p. 1). The summary also notes that the samples include several new sources in Arizona, Colorado, New Mexico, and Utah, which were discovered after May 1956 and found to be unlike the samples from previous reports.
