Pyrohydrolysis in the Analysis of Fluorides and Other Halides

Fluorides and other halides are hydrolyzed completely by passing a rapid stream of superheated steam over the sample near 1000 degrees C in a specially designed platinum reaction tube. Description: Summary: The controlled decomposition of the TCl₅ was carried out in an electric furnace at furnace temperatures varying from 114° to 550°C. The results indicate that chlorine evolution is noticeable when the TCl₅ temperature is about 75°C. The rate of reaction increases rapidly at a TCl₅ temperature of 175°C. Description: "An equation for the steady-state rate of creep has been derived by applying the theory of dislocations to the creep of pure metals. The form of this equation is in agreement with empirical equations describing creep rates.
