Purification of Uranium Tetrachloride by Fractional Condensation

Description: "The effect of a single vacuum sublimation of contaminated uranium tetrachloride, with fractional condensation of the vapors, was investigated to determine whether a high degree of purity would result. It was found that this procedure was an excellent and simple method for obtaining exceedingly pure uranium tetrachloride."

Put the squeeze on the Japanese : beat your promise.

Description: A caucasian man representing American workers squeezes a large clamp around a caricature of Hideki Tojo. The worker wears a sleeveless undershirt labeled "Increased Production". His watch says "RCA". A caption behind his hat says "You and I". Tojo appears to be shouting, as illustrated by several (presumably) Japanese characters. He is reaching toward a bloody sword labeled: "Remember Pearl Harbor!" In the background are battleships, firing tanks, flying airplanes, and lightning bolts.

Pyrohydrolysis in the Analysis of Fluorides and Other Halides

Description: Abstract. Fluorides and other halides are hydrolyzed completely by passing a rapid stream of superheated steam over the sample near 1000 degrees C in a specially designed platinum reaction tube. The steam and hydrogen halide are condensed by cooling, and the resulting distillate titrated with standard sodium hydroxide solution. The fluorides and chlorides of the light metals, hitherto thought of as very difficult to hydrolyze, are mixed with U3O8, or other metallic oxides, which reacts with … more

Qualitative Measurements of Relative Flap Effectiveness at Transonic Speeds on a Series of Five Thin Airfoils With 25-Percent-Chord Flaps and Various Amounts of Sweepback

Description: Report presenting testing on a series of five flat plate models of aspect ratio 2.0 with 25-percent-mean-aerodynamic-chord flaps at a range of Mach numbers in order to investigate the effect of sweepback on flap effectiveness.

Qualitative Observations of the Characteristics of TClâ‚…

Description: Summary: The controlled decomposition of the TCl₅ was carried out in an electric furnace at furnace temperatures varying from 114° to 550°C. The results indicate that chlorine evolution is noticeable when the TCl₅ temperature is about 75°C. The rate of reaction increases rapidly at a TCl₅ temperature of 175°C. Thus the possibility of TCl₅ existing at a very high temperature becomes uncertain. The TCl₄ prepared at the low temperatures (up to 300°) was obtained as a micro crystalline powder while… more

Quantitative analysis for aromatic amines in aviation fuels by ultraviolet spectrophotometry

Description: From Summary: "A method of quantitative analysis for individual aromatic amines or mixtures of aromatic amines in hydrocarbon fuel blends by spectrophotometric measurement of ultraviolet-light absorption is presented. The effect of the precision of the spectrophotometric measurements, the purity of the aromatic amine, photochemical decomposition of the amine, and the composition of the fuel on the accuracy of the analysis is discussed and the results of tests of the precision of the procedure a… more

Quantitative analysis of ternary mixtures of naphthalene, 1-methylnaphthalene, and 2-methylnaphthalene by ultraviolet spectrophotometry

Description: Report presenting a method for quantitative analysis of ternary mixtures of naphthalene, 1-methylnaphthalene, and 2-methylnaphthalene on the basis of ultraviolet absorption in the region from 3000 to 3300 A and the effect of interference by a fourth absorber. Twelve synthetic ternary mixtures of three naphthalenes were analyzed with an average error of 0.8 percent of the alkylnaphthalenes present.

The Quantitative Estimation of the Activity of Beta Particle Emitters

Description: From abstract: "In estimating the activities of β-emitting materials used in the Biology Section, most measurements were made with Geiger-Mueller counters, although Lauritsen electroscopes were used in early work. All samples were mounted on flat porcelain capsules."

Quantitative Study of Variations in Concentration of Glycerol and Aerosol OT on Foaming Volume of Oil at Room Temperature

Description: "The amount of foam that can be formed in the presence of certain pure chemical agents was investigated by a new method. The effect of variations in concentration and proportion of Aerosol OT and glycerol was studied and the effects of various other mixtures have been given for comparison. Both Gulf Agent and Aerosol-OT - glycerol mixtures, when present in comparable amounts, prohibited the formation of the normal volumes of foam to the same extent and in the optimum cases reduced it to only on… more

Quantitative Treatment of the Creep of Metals by Dislocation and Rate-Process Theories

Description: Note presenting an equation for the steady-state rate of creep, which has been derived by applying the theory of dislocations to the creep of pure metals. The form of this equation is in good agreement with empirical equations describing creep rates. A discussion of the way the theory can be applied to alloys, in particular heat-resisting alloys, is also provided.

Quantitative Treatment of the Creep of Metals by Dislocation and Rate-Process Theories

Description: "An equation for the steady-state rate of creep has been derived by applying the theory of dislocations to the creep of pure metals. The form of this equation is in agreement with empirical equations describing creep rates. The theory was also used to predict the dependence of steady-state rate of creep on physical constants of the material and good agreement was obtained with data in the literature for pure annealed metals" (p. 169).
