Balanced Ionization Chamber for Differential Measurements of Gamma Rays

Description: "The purpose of the work was to develop a method of measuring very small differences in the half lives of gamma ray emitting radioactive substances. The apparatus was then used to try to detect a difference in the half lives of Be7 metal and BeO. The results of the measurements on the two different chemical forms of beryllium will be given" (p. 1).

Basic Tables for Chemical Analysis

Description: Abstract: Tables of important data for use in the analytical chemistry laboratory are provided. These tables contain information for use in gas chromatography, liquid chromatography, infrared and ultraviolet spectrophotometry, mass spectrometry, and wet chemical techniques. Tables relating to safe practice in the analytical laboratory are also included.

Behavior of Bond Under Dynamic Loading

Description: The objectives of this research program are to determine bond strength under dynamic loading, to compare bond strengths under static and dynamic loading, and to test the adequacy of ACI Building Code bond requirements for structural elements subjected to blast loads. The tests have shown that local static bond strengths may be as high as 0.75 fc and that under dynamic loading this strength increases to fc. For all practical lengths of embedment of bars, steel failure is to be expected both unde… more

Behavior of Irradiated Metallic Fuel Elements Exposed to Nuclear Excursion in TREAT

Description: In fast reactor safety studies, it is imperative to know the effects of temperature excursions on the fuel elements. Previous controlled out-of-pile experiments on the behavior of uranium fuel elements under meltdown or near-meltdown conditions have been performed using direct electrical resistance heating or furnace heating. As a step toward obtaining more complete information on reactivity effects accompanying fuel meltdown, the behavior of irradiated EBR II and Fermi A samples under transien… more

The Behavior of Some Solid Materials Under Pile Operating Conditions

Description: Technical report abstract. The present state of knowledge concerning the effect of pile radiation on a variety of solid materials is reviewed. Radiation corrosion will not be a serious hazard for aluminum or stainless steel but it can be for iron or lead if either are exposed to water. Apart from corrosion the principal uncertainty is in regard to the Wigner effect on the behavior of metals. There is at present no ground for optimism regarding the behavior of tuballoy. The effect on alumin… more

Behavior of Transistors in a Magnetic Field

Description: Experiments are described which show that magnetic fields can exert a controlling influence on the operating characteristics of point contact transistors. The effect is especially evident when the transistor is operated in its negative resistance region. The frequency of an oscillator can be varied, or a switch made to trigger by applying a magnetic field to the transistor. Some applications of the principle are suggested; many more are evident.

Beneficiation of Monument Number 2 Ore Apache County, Arizona

Description: From introduction: The Monument No. 2 mine is in the Navajo Indian Reservation, Apache County, Arizona, about 20 miles southwest from the San Juan River at Mexican Hat, Utah, and 26 miles southwest from Mexican Water, Arizona. The property has been operated, since its discovery, by Vanadium Corporation of America, which holds a 10-year mining lease, granted through the Interior Department, to 43 acres of ground. History of the discovery of the deposit is vague, but reportedly it was first seen … more

Beta Gage for Localized Measurements on Thin Films

Description: A gage employing a narrow "pencil" of beta-rays has been developed to determine the thickness of films used a cyclotron targets. The instrument, pictured in Figure 1, allows an estimate of the evenness of films a few mg/cm thick by reproducibly scanning the sample with a collimated beta-ray beam 3/32 in. in diameter.
