Characteristics of potential repository wastes. Volume 1

Description: This document, and its associated appendices and microcomputer (PC) data bases, constitutes the reference OCRWM data base of physical and radiological characteristics data of radioactive wastes. This Characteristics Data Base (CDB) system includes data on spent nuclear fuel and high-level waste (HLW), which clearly require geologic disposal, and other wastes which may require long-term isolation, such as sealed radioisotope sources. The data base system was developed for OCRWM by the CDB Projec… more

Characteristics of potential repository wastes. Volume 2

Description: The LWR spent fuels discussed in Volume 1 of this report comprise about 99% of all domestic non-reprocessed spent fuel. In this report we discuss other types of spent fuels which, although small in relative quantity, consist of a number of diverse types, sizes, and compositions. Many of these fuels are candidates for repository disposal. Some non-LWR spent fuels are currently reprocessed or are scheduled for reprocessing in DOE facilities at the Savannah River Site, Hanford Site, and the Idaho … more

Characteristics of process oils from HTI coal/plastics co-liquefaction runs

Description: The objective of this project is to provide timely analytical support to DOE`s liquefaction development effort. Specific objectives of the work reported here are: (1) to determine the fate of the plastics feedstocks, relative to coal-only operation; (2) to determine the conversion of the feedstocks; (3) to determine the product streams to which the feedstocks are converted (bottoms vs. distillate); (4) to determine interactions of feedstocks; (5) to determine how use of plastics feedstocks affe… more

Characteristics of Produced Water Discharged to the Gulf of Mexico Hypoxiczone.

Description: Each summer, an area of low dissolved oxygen (the hypoxic zone) forms in the shallow nearshore Gulf of Mexico waters from the Mississippi River Delta westward to near the Texas/Louisiana border. Most scientists believe that the leading contributor to the hypoxic zone is input of nutrients (primarily nitrogen and phosphorus compounds) from the Mississippi and Atchafalaya Rivers. The nutrients stimulate growth of phytoplankton. As the phytoplankton subsequently die, they fall to the bottom waters… more

Characteristics of Propeller Sections Tested in the Variable Density Wind Tunnel

Description: "Tests were carried out in the variable density wind tunnel of the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics on six airfoil sections used by the Bureau of Aeronautics as propeller sections. The sections were tested at pressures of 1 and 20 atmospheres corresponding to Reynolds numbers of about 170,000 and 3,500,000. The results obtained, besides providing data for the design of propellers, should be of special interest because of the opportunity afforded for the study of scale effect on a fam… more

Characteristics of radiated power for various TFTR (Tokamak Fusion Test Reactor) regimes

Description: Power loss studies were carried out to determine the impurity radiation and energy transport characteristics of various TFTR operation and confinement regimes including L-Mode, detached plasma, co-only neutral beam injection (energetic ion regime), and the enhanced confinement (''supershot'') regime. Combined bolometric, spectroscopic, and infrared photometry measurements provide a picture of impurity behavior and power accounting in TFTR. The purpose of this paper is to make a survey of the va… more

CHARACTERISTICS OF RADIOACTIVITY PRODUCED BY NUCLEAR EXPLOSIVES

Description: The amounts and kinds of radioactivities produced by detonation of a nuclear explosive are dependent upon the specific design of the explosive. The two design extremes are a pure fission device, which will produce about 1.4 x 10/ sup 23/ fissions, and therefore about 2.8 x 10/sup 23/ fission products, per kiloton of energy released, and a pure thermonuclear device which would produce no fission products, but would produce approximately 10/sup 23/ atoms of tritium per kiloton. In both cases, int… more

Characteristics Of Radioactivity Produced By Nuclear Explosives

Description: The production of energy by nuclear reactions results in the production of radioactive nuclei. Therefore, in considering the possible utilization of nuclear explosives for peaceful purposes it is necessary to be able to predict the expected activities, their amounts, and dispositions. The amounts and kinds of radioactivities produced by detonation of a nuclear explosive are dependent upon the specific design of the explosive. The behavior and ultimate fate of the activities produced by the expl… more

CHARACTERISTICS OF RANGE HOODS IN CALIFORNIA HOMES DATA COLLECTED FROM A REAL ESTATE WEB SITE

Description: Venting range hoods are important residential ventilation components that remove pollutants generated by cooking activities and natural gas cooking burners. To address the lack of data on range hood installations in California, we conducted a survey by examining photographs of homes for sale or rent listed on a popular real estate web site. The survey was conducted in November 2010 and April–May 2011. Posted photos of the homes were reviewed to determine if a hood was installed, the type of hoo… more

Characteristics of round and extracted strands of Nb3Al Rutherford cable

Description: Long Nb{sub 3}Al strands with copper stabilizer are promising for future high field accelerator magnets. A 1.2 kilometer Nb{sub 3}Al strand with Cu stabilizer was fabricated at the National Institute for Materials Science in Japan. Using this strand a 30 meter Cu stabilized Nb{sub 3}Al Rutherford cable was made for the first time by a collaboration of NIMS and Fermilab. The Nb{sub 3}Al strands extracted from cable with a relatively low packing factor showed almost no J{sub c} degradation. But t… more

Characteristics of self-sensing actuation for active control

Description: The benefits of a collocated sensor actuator pair are well known within the controls community. Generally speaking, collocation offers the use of simple control algorithms with reduced instabilities due to spillover. One method for achieving collocation is the implementation of a ``sentuator`` in which a piezoelectric element functions simultaneously as both a sensor and an actuator. Past work in utilizing a sentuator has primarily been limited to piezoelectric films and patches mounted to flex… more

Characteristics of Several Single- and Dual-Rotating Propellers in Negative Thrust

Description: Report discusses the thrust and power characteristics of several single- and dual-rotating propellers with differing blade width and number of blades for negative-thrust operation from -45 degrees to 145 degrees blade angle. From Summary: "The tests indicate that it is possible to predict for a given propeller design characteristics in the negative-thrust range from known characteristics at a different activity factor. Adequate negative thrusts were indicated for extremely high positive as well… more

Characteristics of shear damage for 60Sn-40Pb solder material

Description: This paper presents an investigation of the development of a continuum damage model capable of accurately analyzing shear damage in 60Sn-40Pb solder material. Based on the theory of damage mechanics, an internal state variable known as the damage variable is introduced to characterize material degradation caused by the change of material microstructures under load. A damage surface in stress space is proposed to quantify damage initiation and its successive expanding surfaces to represent damag… more

Characteristics of shock-compressed configuration of Ti and Si powder mixtures

Description: Shock-compression recovery experiments were performed on mixtures of Ti and Si powders of fine, medium, and coarse morphology, and packed at different initial densities, using the Sandia Momma and Poppa Bear fixtures with Baratol explosive. The shock-compressed configuration revealed characteristics typical of either chemically reacted material with fine equiaxed grains, or unreacted material with densely packed Ti and Si particles. The unreacted configuration showed that Ti particles were exte… more

Fusion 40 (2000) 557], that is, approximately 0.3 MHz up to ≈ 1.2 MHz, are modes propagating counter to the neutral beam ions. These have been modeled as Compressional and Global Alfven Eigenmodes (CAE and GAE) and are excited through a Doppler-shifted cyclotron resonance with the beam ions.
